Ram Unveils Multifunction Split Tailgate Available on 2019 1500Posted in News on February 5, 2019
Rumors have abounded for some time that Ram would introduce a new take on the truck tailgate, and the chickens have come home to roost. Available on the 2019 1500 pickup will be Ram’s new multifunction split tailgate, which costs $995 and features a 60/40 vertical split that opens Dutch door–style. The tailgate will also operate conventionally, and Ram claims it has a 2,000-pound load capacity when flipped down like a regular tailgate.
Compared to GMC’s MultiPro tailgate, Ram’s solution allows for easier bed access—opening the split tailgate on its side hinges allows a person (or a forklift) to get closer to the bed for loading and unloading. Ram also says it’s beneficial when it comes time to hose out the bed. The doors open independently as well, which is a useful feature, and the tailgate option comes packaged with a spray-in bedliner. A $295 retractable bumper step is available as an option.
Ultimately, we’re not sure we’d rather have this type of tailgate over the MultiPro found on the GMC Sierra 1500 SLT and Denali. While the Ram multifunction tailgate does facilitate easier, closer loading and unloading, it doesn’t offer the genuinely useful step-in feature of the MultiPro, nor does it have a load stop like the MultiPro. To its credit, Ram says the multifunction tailgate is still usable in all of its modes when a trailer is connected, something that can’t be said of the MultiPro.
Durability is also something of a question—we could see the latch between the two tailgate segments becoming squeaky after a few miles of rough road. Still, Ram’s product quality is better now than ever, and it’s likely the company spent the time to ensure the multifunction tailgate is ready for the abuse.
The Ram multifunction tailgate will be available on all grades of the Ram 1500, with first examples hitting dealers in the second quarter of 2019. For now, it’s only available on the light-duty truck. But it’s possible the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty will be available with the split tailgate.
