Audi’s Electric Off-Roader Concept - AI:TRAIL quattro

Audi revealed an electric off-road concept at the recent 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. The four-seat Audi AI:TRAIL quattro is the fourth vehicle in Audi's concept lineup.

The AI:TRAIL quattro features four electric motors along with systems for assisted and automated driving. The vehicle uses the same Audi quattro permanent all-wheel drive found on current model cars. The vehicle is made up of a mixture of high-tech steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. The AI:TRAIL quattro weighs in at 3,858 pounds, even with the high capacity battery.

The AI:TRAIL quattro has 22-inch wheels with massive custom designed off-road tires. A structure of supporting struts are integrated into the tire treads. The tires have variable, sensor-controlled air pressure regulation. Pressures can automatically be reduced when driving on various terrains.

Like something out of the future, large windows provide extra elbow room inside the vehicle. The glass roof provides a clear view of the sky. Lighting is provided by five rotorless triangular drones with integrated LED elements. They can land on the roof, automatically docking into inductive charging ports. The drones also have the ability to fly ahead of the vehicle, and the user can activate cameras on them that will show up through wifi on the interior display. When the AI:TRAIL quattro is stationary, the drones can hover, providing lighting around the vehicle.

The windshield and tailgate both open, providing large storage space options. Dirty items including boots, wet clothing, and other gear can be stored in the bumper, keeping them separated from the interior. Running boards extend when needed, providing step access to the roof.

The seats have four-point seat belts commonly found in other off-road vehicles. The seats can even be removed and used as outdoor chairs! Now that is some high-tech off-roading of the future.

Audi built the vehicle as a concept of sustainability. Audi hopes future customers will be able to order vehicles such as the AI:TRAIL quattro from an on-demand motor pool that will suit their personal preferences. The lease will be for a limited time.

Customer profiles will be stored via an app. When the customer books a vehicle, everything including preferred interior temperature, ergonomic seat adjustment and personal music library will already be loaded into the vehicle's computer system. The vehicle's colors and interior features will also be able to be pre-configured via website or app.
