Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab Wins Four Wheeler Magazine’s 2013 Four Wheeler of the Year Competition

El Segundo, CA Four Wheeler magazine has named the 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab the winner of its highly sought-after Four Wheeler of the Year award. Four Wheeler magazine has been conducting the competition since 1974, and it is one of the most daunting challenges a vehicle can undergo.

To participate in the Four Wheeler of the Year evaluation, a vehicle must be either all new or substantially revised from the previous model year. All vehicles must be available for sale to the public by January 15, 2013, and at least 1,500 units must be produced for sale within the continental U.S. All vehicles must use a two-speed transfer case. The complete test results and vehicle evaluations for the 2013 Four Wheeler of the Year competition will appear in the February 2013 issue of Four Wheeler. Two vehicles qualified this year - the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Both vehicles were tough in competition and, as expected, the judging came down to the wire. In the end, however, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab emerged victorious, edging the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk version by the narrowest of margins. Each vehicle was evaluated in five categories by five members of the Four Wheeler editorial staff:

  • Trail performance
  • Mechanical and empirical data
  • Highway performance
  • Interior
  • Exterior

The competition took place over five days and 1,000 miles, providing the panel of five judges ample seat time in each of the 4x4s. Judges tested performance on a number of terrain types as well as pavement to get a feel for not only what the vehicles had under the hood, but also experience the comfort and design of the interior and chassis.

“The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab is an extremely versatile vehicle,” said John Cappa, editor of Four Wheeler.  “It was a hands-down trail-favorite of the Four Wheeler judges. The improved interior comfort, amenities, power, and overall performance both on- and off-road make it worthy of being our 2013 Four Wheeler of the Year.

“The new Jeep Wrangler Moab edition is a perfect example of listening to our loyal Wrangler owners, who appreciate new levels of capability in a unique package,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “The Moab edition recognizes a die-hard off-roading destination Jeep owners love while providing even more capability, including winch-ready steel bumpers, upgraded rock rails and a rear locker. We’re especially pleased that the influential Four Wheeler editors put our latest Jeep Wrangler to the test and clearly recognized its capability.”
