So just in case you missed it I had a fairly spectacular break on my '49 Willys at the 51st anual Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari. It was Saturday AM and Christian Hazel was riding shot gun with me. We were headed out into the Truckhaven Hills looking for Jeeps having fun...OK we were playing around a little bit too. Christian and I were talking away; blaa blaa blaa blaa blaa... We were cresting over some small rolling hills when suddenly I noticed that the back side of the small rolling hill we were currently on was washed out and was basically a 6-foot drop. We were not going very fast (First gear high range), but we had reached the point of no return so I stabbed the gas, yelled something like "Oh Poop" and held on. The flattie came down the 6-foot drop and rolled forward on its front tires in an endo that had to have been 10 maybe 15 feet long. During this I revved the piss out of the little V-6 hoping to drive out of what could have been a forward roll. All of a sudden the endo ended and the rear axle slammed back down to the ground hard. The rear axle housing was broken. Very broken. Luckily both Christian and I were fine, and we avoided a forwards roll...Here is a picture shot by Fred Williams of Petersen's 4 Wheel and Off-Road of the aftermath the next morning as the sun rose. Man I love TDS...to bad my Jeep was too broken to really enjoy it this year...Ill have to go back out to Truckhaven for some nacho's action before too long!
