Well, that was fast! Four Wheeler Overland Adventure West is barely a memory and we're already getting ready to pack up for the inaugural East Coast version, since the one out west was such a hit! Four Wheeler Overland Adventure East will head to the Mid-Atlantic region October 7-10, 2019, traveling mainly off-road by day and camping by night. The overlanding-palooza will continue when we attend the premier overlanding event, Overland Expo East (Overland Adventure East's official event partner), which takes place October 11-13 at Infinity Downs Farm in Arrington, Virginia. The 2019 Four Wheeler Overland Adventure East is sponsored by Dick Cepek Tires and Dee Zee, and we'll be sharing all the adventures and a closer look at the rigs that came along over the coming months. But for now, meet the 20 overlanders!
Overlanders: Joseph Anthony Polcari and Rebecca Ryan Reder
Vehicle: '81 Land Rover Series 3 109 Stage 1 wagon
About: "Both my fianc and I work 40-plus-hour desk jobs and try to unplug whenever we get a chance. Overlanding in the Land Rover is a very basic, analog experience. Traveling in such a simplistic vehicle carrying just as much as we need to get by is an enjoyable experience that we find ourselves doing more and more every year," Joseph said. Their minimalist approach to overlanding meant not much had to be done to the Rover: a Detroit Locker, upgraded cooling for the Holley Street Avenger-equipped 4.6L Rover V-8, Edelbrock Performer intake, LT95 trans/T-case unit, homemade header/exhaust system with an assist from Flowmaster, front disc-brake conversion, onboard air, BFGoodrich KM2 tires with Wolf wheels, Old Man Emu shocks and steering stabilizer, homemade front bumper, and disc brake conversion, among the changes and carry-ons. The rear bench was yanked and replaced by a cot.

Vehicle: '17 Ram 2500 Power Wagon
About: "Not much to modify, as the Wagon comes with most items an overlander would add to any vehicle." Michael did, however, swap the winch's steel cable for reflective synthetic rope and stepped up to 35-inch Nitto G2 Terra Grapplers. There's also a VIAIR 450 air compressor, Trigger Six Shooter controller for the lights, and an air compressor. A Smittybilt rooftop tent will be broken in by the time you read this, after all previous overlanding trips involving camping or sleeping in the truck. Why does Michael overland? "I like adventure."
Overlanders: Steve and Terri Brock
Vehicle: '12 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
About: The couple says, "People can't believe that we think going out on the road and trail, sleeping in our Jeep, is fun, also going places that have no electricity, restroom, or showers. But I will say, it is awesome to be able to connect with nature, God, and good people, and, in my opinion, to be able to live the good, simple, free overlanding life." To do so, they've added a 4-inch Superlift suspension lift, Fox shocks and steering stabilizer, Pro Comp wheels with 35-inch Kenda Klever tires, custom-built driveshafts, custom front bumper with plate for the Superwinch unit, Superchips programmer, and an Adventure Trailer that's equipped with everything from solar panels and a DIY shower system to a custom cargo rack and portable propane. The Adventure Trailer has a solid axle with trailer leaf springs and 35-inch Cooper tires with Pro Comp wheels, custom cargo rack, and all the essentials you could name.
Overlander: Brandon Hinton
Vehicle: '10 Jeep Wrangler
About: "I overland because there are places still without a cell signal," Brandon explained. To get to them, his Jeep is equipped with items like a 3 1/2-inch Metalcloak suspension lift with Daystar 1-inch body lift, Bilstein shocks, Dana 44s, Poison Spyder Rocker Knockers, DV8 Offroad bumpers, Eaton ELockers, 4.56 gearing, and 35-inch Kumho tires. The '67 M-416 trailer's frame has been extended 22 inches, a there's a 2 1/2-inch Rancho lift for a CJ-2 as well as the company's shocks, custom rear bumper, and matching 35s. A portable shower and toilet, Smittybilt rooftop tent and winch, Coleman stove, water storage, and generator are among the various bring-alongs. "I built my trailer not to be dropped off at camp or on the side off the road when there is a tough trail. It's track width-matched and it goes where the Jeep goes."

Vehicle: '01 Jeep Cherokee
About: "As we developed more and more of a love for this sport, we ventured farther and farther for our off-road adventures. We have just as much fun exploring the highways and backcountry as we do at the actual events themselves. The time we share on the road, experiencing new places for the first time, brings us together as a family and makes beautiful memories." The Jeep is equipped with about 5 inches of lift, thanks to Old Man Emu suspension and shocks, beefed axles, a Spectre cowl intake, high-pinion Dana 30 front axle, Driveshafts Unlimited 'shafts front and rear, Cragar wheels with beadlocks paired with 33-inch General Grabbers, custom rollcage, JcrOffroad rear bumper and Logans Metal Products 4x4 front bumper. There are also steering parts from Currie and Savvy Offroad, Corbeau seats, Warn winch, custom-made storage, and lots of DIY modifications and fabrication. The trailer is indeed how it looks—the back half of a Cherokee with a matching lift and tires, roof rack, and 4 inches of lift.

Vehicle: '49 International KB2
About: "I overland because the best adventures include dirt," said Joel. His work-in-progress International has a '73 Chevy 4x4 chassis, Chevy 350 engine, Cooper Discoverer tires with Chevy steel wheels, custom 2-inch dual exhaust, Holley Truck Avenger carb, and custom rack.
Overlanders: Darek Michalecki and Maciek Michalecki
Vehicle: '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee
About: How do you set up a Jeep for a lifestyle of having "an awesome opportunity to see places some people never get to see, meet new like-minded people, and spend quality time together off-roading and camping"? In this case, it was a 6-inch suspension system from Clayton Off Road with custom long arms, 1-ton steering, raised fuel tank, Yukon diff cover in front and one from Chassis Unlimited at the rear, Goliath Off Road bumpers, rock sliders, Rigid Industries lights and lightbar, 33-inch tires, Dana 30 front and Dana 44 HD rear axles, and roof rack. A Smittybilt rooftop tent is also in the fray. Magnaflow and Dynomax handle exhaust duties.

Vehicle: '08 Toyota FJ Cruiser
About: Why does the Toy have a 2 1/2-inch lift, skidplates, K&N filter, Borla exhaust, Toyo Open Country rubber with Summit Racing wheels with Spidertrax wheel spacers, ARB overhead center console, Dometic fridge, Warrior lightbar, Harbor Freight Tools portable compressor, and loads more recovery and functional gear? "I love my truck as well as the outdoors, and anytime I can put the two of those together, I'm golden!"

Vehicle: '15 Toyota 4Runner
About: Among the upgrades this Toyota received were a 2-inch lift, 31-inch BFGoodrich tires with KMC wheels, a Warn winch on a receiver hitch mount for use front and rear, and off-road lighting. The M-101 military trailer is the source for the rooftop tent. Why do they overland? Joel said, "I've been an outdoors person since childhood. I've had 4x4 trucks in the past that were big and bad for wheeling, but I really like overlanding because it's from point A to point B and there are no limits between the points. It combines 4x4 off-roading with camping and the Great Outdoors. Nothing better than that."
Overlanders: Kevin Winskey and Emilee Winskey
Vehicle: '11 Ford F-150 Raptor
About: The Winskey's truck is built up with a midperch setup in front and 2-inch Deaver leaf packs at the other end, with frame reinforcement and air bumps. It also has a Rogue Racing rear bumper, Gobi Racks roof rack, and loads of off-road lighting. There are also 35-inch Goodyear DuraTracs, R1 Concepts brakes, Method Race wheels, Stainless Works headers, Recon winch, K&N cold-air intake, Bak tonneau, and Dirty Deeds Industries exhaust. They've taken the truck to Moab and multiple Raptor-themed runs in Michigan.
Overlander: Todd Nonn
Vehicle: '12 Jeep Wrangler
About: "I overland because it lets me experience and take in parts of the world most cannot, to unplug and re-energize from my busy life." And how that happens is in part to how Todd designed his Jeep, which includes Rock Krawler Suspension 2 1/2-inch coils, Bilstein shocks, 35-inch BFGoodrich KM3s with MB Wheels at the center, Mopar rock rails, K&N filter, Tom Wood's driveshafts, AEV ProCal module, Bestop doors and soft top along with the hardtop, TeraFlex exhaust spacer kit, a bumper modification to make way for a winch, a lightbar, and Tuffy console. There's also a homemade teardrop trailer.
Overlander: Kenneth David Glover
Vehicle: '10 Chevy Colorado Z71
About: "I've been camping solo since I was 6 years old and it has been one of the only constant hobbies in my life. If you combine 4x4 and camping, you have the perfect combination for adventure." Kenneth's modifications were born out of "necessity" and include a Jeep Dana 20 T-case swap with TeraFlex Low20 gearing and JB Fabrication twin sticks, ARB Air Locker in front and Ox Locker at the rear, Posi-Lok, Hummer H3 front diff, GM 10-bolt rear axle, Bilstein shocks, BFGoodrich KM2 tires with Toyota wheels, Tom Wood's driveshafts, tuned V-8, rock sliders, skidplates, Holden Rodeo snorkel, Bullmaxx brushguard with DIY front hitch and shackles, ARE topper, ARB fridge, homemade roof rack and storage, and rear disc-brake conversion. Sleeping happens in a Clark hammock.
Overlander: James Mallios
Vehicle: '15 Ram 3500
About: The Cummins-stuffed Ram has had quite a few mods, "because no one likes getting stuck in their vehicle." This includes an ARB front bumper/grilleguard, Warn winch, Synergy steering system, Icon Vehicle Dynamics coils and shocks, Carli Suspension sway bar, 35-inch Toyo tires with KMC wheels, ARB twin air compressor, and Power Stop brakes. The diesel is aided by an AFE cold-air intake and AEV snorkel and ProCal module. Out back is a Rhino-Rack with drawer system, M101 military trailer, and more. "I overland because it is a way for me to get away from my business, my busy schedule, and reconnect with nature and the outdoors, a time for me to reset before returning to the day to day stresses."
Overlander: Paul Robert Dickinson
Vehicle: '98 Jeep Wrangler
About: "I overland because it combines my love of four-wheeling, camping, and exploring. I also enjoy the camaraderie around a campfire when there is a group of us overlanding." To ensure he can do the trifecta of awesome, Paul added a 3 1/2-inch Rubicon Express lift, Bilstein shocks, Dana axles with Alloy USA axleshafts, Detroit Locker, Currie front sway bar and steering, Tom Wood's rear driveshaft, Dick Cepek rubber, skidplates and other beefy protection, plus Pro Comp front bumper, TheDirtworx rear bumper, Warn winch, Hella lights, roof rack with lightbar, and more. The trailer is homebuilt.
Overlanders: Jonathan Girard and Jean Trudeau
Vehicle: '17 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro
About: Under the Toyota is a factory TRD Pro lift and Old Man Emu leaf packs, plus homemade rock sliders and skidplates. Jonathan also added a Leer camper shell, lightbar, decked drawer system, Alu-Cab tent, ARB awnings, dual-battery setup, fridge, and water-tank system. The truck also sports BFGoodrich KO2s with TRD wheels. "I overland because I need to get away from civilization. I like to travel to remote places and be self-sufficient."
Overlanders: Taylor Wise and Virginia Davis
Vehicle: '89 Chevy S-10
About: "I overland because I love getting out off the beaten path where I can find challenging places to wheel and beautiful scenery where I can admire Mother Nature." Assistance comes from a solid-axle swap—Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear—as well as a three-link suspension with 10-inch Fox Racing coilovers and Zone Offroad shocks, Chevy 1-ton steering, Detroit Lockers, and 4.88 gears. The truck also has a Warn winch, custom front and rear bumpers and sliders, and rack for the rooftop tent. Onboard air comes by way of a York compressor and it also has a Premier Power Welder unit. The rubber hits the road and the off-road by way of 35-inch Milestar Patagonias with Hummer H2 wheels. Corbeau seats keep things comfortable. There's also a custom flatbed with storage underneath.
Overlanders: AJ Johnson and Ashley Marland
Vehicle: '90 Chevy K1500
About: "I overland an old Chevy because I enjoy working on it and being able to fix anything on it myself instead of relying on the dealership." It has a 5.3L from a 2000 model, Walker muffler, Auto Meter trans temp gauge, 34-inch radiator built for diesels, and Ford F-150 cooling fans. Richard rebuilt the original NP241, changing the input shaft to mate with the 4L80E so that the truck now has working tow/haul mode. The rear suspension is leaf springs from a 2500 coupled with KYB shocks, and it has a 14-bolt rear. Cooper Discoverer tires with American Racing wheels, custom bed rack, homemade carrier for the Wavian jerrycan, and rooftop tent are other necessities. "I enjoy the journey."

Vehicle: '04 Land Rover Discovery SE7
About: "I overland because I get bored walking and my wife and I have four boys between 6 and 12 years old and we can't think of a better way to gain life experiences away from a screen than playing chess with nature in our 4WDs. Enjoying the nature, the adventure, and the mechanicals potentially afterward in our opinion is priceless." Highlights of what's required to get away from it all include a rebuilt 4.6L V-8, Terrafirma 5-inch lift and shocks, ARB bumper with Warrior winch, Safari Snorkel unit, custom roof rack, Smittybilt rear tire rack, and Goodyear Fierce Attitude tires with custom stock wheels.
Overlanders: Ken and Charla Smith
Vehicle: '71 Chevy K20
About: "There are times I want to go rockcrawling and I have a CJ for that. Other times, I like taking creature comforts and slowing the pace down." The truck has a Cummins engine, NV4500, and NP241, with more beef coming from a Dana 60 front with Detroit and Yukon hubs and Dana 80 rear with ARB locker. There's a Warn winch, Bubba Rope, Premier Power Welder, rollcage, 35-inch Falken Wildpeaks, and underbed storage for gear, including that for recovery and camping. There's a sleeping platform fit for a queen-size mattress.
Overlanders: Kraig and Stephanie Mackett
Vehicle: '91 Land Rover Defender 90
About: Among the mods were the addition of a 2.8L Cummins, Holset Turbochargers turbo, and 6L80E transmission, plus 3-inch RTE suspension, Rock Krawler Suspension shocks, heavy-duty axles, underbody protection, exocage, bumper with Superwinch, Rover's North sliders and bumper, and 35-inch Maxxis Trepador tires. There's a Front Runner rear drawer system and 40-quart fridge that'll slide/tilt, and either an ARB or Malamoo tent can be utilized. "I overland because I wanted to find a way to connect with my 12-year old-daughter, who I figured would be too cool to talk to me at any time," Kraig said of Stephanie. "My goal was to find something we could do together, have shared experiences, talk while we did it, and wouldn't make me vomit (pageants were out)."
