2001 Honda Sportra 400EX - 17 ATV's For 2001!

The wheelbase is only about one third of your pal's (or arch enemy's) F-150. And the displacement is down by more than 90 percent. Sounds like a vehicle more suitable for an RC off-road track.

But let's talk about performance for a minute. Last July 4, ATVs racing at the famous Pikes Peak Hillclimb smoked all the two-wheelers and were faster than two thirds of all the competing classes, which included sedans, trucks, and open-wheel racers - both 2WD and 4WD. In fact, two modified Yamaha Banshee ATVs with turbos were in serious contention for the overall Pikes Peak record that Rod Millen set a few years ago with his Toyota

Tacoma 4WD. Imagine screaming toward the skyline at 100 mph while sitting on top of a vehicle no bigger than a riding lawnmower.

The production quads offered by the big OEMs are a little tamer than the Pikes Peak machines, but they'll still put a big smile on the face of any hard-core off-roader. The 4WDs used for hunting and farming account for the majority of ATV sales (bet you didn't know that ATVs outsell both dirt bikes and street motorcycles combined), but the Sport and High-Performance ATV market is on fire with new and more exciting models offered each year. These are strictly fun machines not designed to haul stuff, but to haul butt.

Fun In Three FlavorsThe fastest ATVs, the High-Performance quads, all come with manual shift, manual clutch transmissions. The riders of these machines want a lot of power and total control over that power. Dual A-arms up front and plenty of suspension travel allows pounding hard through rough terrain and soaking up hard landings from frightening jumps. Yamaha's new 660R Raptor is the machine to watch in this category.

The Sport ATVs are for the rider who cares more about simply having fun with his buddies than conquering the Baja 1000. All these quads have a Reverse gear and most have electric starters. Some, such as the Polaris, even come with fully automatic transmissions - just push the button and rock. The exciting newcomer in this category is Honda's 250EX.

What happens if the going gets really sloppy? What do you do if the ledges are a bit taller than you expected? It's time for a four-by, of course. While many 4WD ATVs are designed for poking around, others are pure sport and are all about hammering over and through the worst possible terrain in the fastest way possible.
