Product Review - Bestop Storage BoxesPosted in Product Reviews on February 1, 2001 Comment (0)
Bestop has built its reputation on making tough equipment that holds up under all kinds of adversity. From soft tops and hardtops to consoles and seats, Bestop is well regarded among four-wheelers for producing OE-quality parts.
Less well known is Bestop's line of weatherproof storage boxes. Molded from cross-linked polyethylene and equipped with heavy-duty hinges and locks, these boxes are designed to take the kind of abuse you routinely find off road, while protecting the gear and valuables inside from dust and rain.
Designed to fit in the back of Jeep Wrangler TJs and YJs, CJ-5s and -7s, and Suzuki Sidekicks and Trackers, these boxes are available in black or charcoal, and come in three basic configurations.
The side storage modules sit perfectly over the wheelwells and can be used with the rear seat either in or out. They feature built-in cup holders, carry handles, and even speaker panels for some models.
Whether you have a hardtop or a soft top, the rear storage box is easy to get to and sits precisely between the rear seat and the tailgate. For anything you want access to quickly out on the trail, this box is ideal. It is deep enough and wide enough to hold a good amount of gear and tools.
If you have no use for your rear seat and are willing to trade it for maximum storage space, then the internal cargo box is just the ticket. Measuring 36x25x21 inches, the cargo box provides space for all those large, unwieldy items that usually end up banging around in the back of your rig. It features two locks and can either be bolted down or secured to the side storage boxes.
We installed two side storage boxes in our CJ-7 nearly a year ago and have since toted them up and down California and throughout the Southwest on one trail after another in all kinds of weather. After dragging tools and spare parts out of them, over them, and around them, they definitely look a little battle scarred. But aside from the incidental scratches and oil stains, the boxes are still as stout and weatherproof as the day we installed them.
These boxes will never rust. They will add very little weight to your trail rig. And consider this: With the half-life of polyethylene plastic being what it is, these boxes will be around long after most of the vehicles they grace.
