Best Tube Notcher Product - M-Tech Supply's Terrific Tube Notcher - Tools Of The TradePosted in Product Reviews on April 1, 2004
Since we're featuring so much hard-core tech in this issue of OFF-ROAD, much of which requires heavy fabrication, we thought it a good idea to take a look at one of the simplest, yet most important, tools you can have in your home garage: a tube notcher. Any time you need to fabricate a rollcage, build a tube bumper, or more simply, connect two round pieces of tubing together at an angle, you'll need a great tube notcher to get the job done. Not all notchers are created equal, and this one from M-Tech Supply is one of the nicest we've used.
The notcher is a simple device designed to be used in conjunction with either a drill press or stationary-mounted electric drill. The notcher is comprised of several parts. The adjustable baseplate is clamped to the drill press' work surface. The aluminum block in which the shaft rotates is lubricated with grease, and the clamp is adjustable for tubing sizes between 1/2 and 3 inches. The drill does most of the work by rotating the appropriate-size hole saw to cut through the tubing. The fishmouth shape cut at the end of the tubing is a perfect contour that mirrors the outside diameter of the tubing. It's this special contour that allows the tubing to intersect perfectly with the outside diameter of another tube, making it possible to weld the two tubes together without any large gaps.
M-Tech Supply's notcher is built from the best materials possible. The adjustable baseplate is laser-cut from aluminum, and the shaft housing is CNC-cut from solid billet aluminum. For more information on this cool product, contact M-Tech Supply.
