A Buyer's Guide to Exhaust and Intake Systems and Components
Our vehicles are just like us, if they don't have a chance to breathe, they will die... well, not quite, but their performance, fuel economy, and life span will be dramatically shortened. Typically, the causes of this underperformance are restricted exhaust systems, clogged intakes and filters, or just a general restriction of performance due to the tight OE specs necessitated by local emission regulations. The following products are just a small sample of the high-quality, OE replacement items available to increase both your vehicle's performance and its fuel economy.
AEM Workhorse HD Diesel Intake
Advanced Engine Management's (AEM) Workhorse HD diesel intake system consists of a massive Dryflow filter element that delivers up to 33 percent more flow than the OE units found on Cummins, Duramax, and Power Stroke diesel and big-block engines. In addition to increasing power and getting the most performance from the stock or repro-grammed ECUs, the increase in airflow offered by this kit also helps to efficiently burn fuel, which reduces exhaust smoke and oil contaminants caused by unburned fuel. The reusable Dryflow air filter is engineered to flow 1,350 cfm, which allows for longer service life and higher efficiency for maximum performance in between cleanings. The filter does not use oil to trap dirt, thereby eliminating any chances of oil traveling up the air inlet and fouling the mass airflow sensor.AEM's Workhorse intakes feature mandrel-bent, lightweight aircraft aluminum chambers with high-strength, TIG-welded brackets and fittings for maximum durability, and include a heavy-duty steel heat shield with a standard black powdercoated finish. The systems are also available in silver powdercoat or mirror-polished finish. They carry a limited lifetime warranty and are 50-state legal.
MBRP Diesel Exhaust System
Taking a deep breath just a got a lot easier thanks to MBRP's new line of exhaust systems available for all '05-'06 and some '07 Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet/GMC diesel pickup applications. Fabricated from top-of-the-line T409 and T304 stainless steel that has been mandrel-bent in all the right places, these 4- and 5-inch after-cat systems include low-restriction mufflers and OE mounting locations. When the gas pedal is tapped, a low and impressive growl is heard, with performance following right behind. All systems - both single and Cool Duals - feature aluminized tubing with double-walled polished stainless steel tips. These systems significantly reduce exhaust backpressure and account for performance increases and better fuel economy.
Airaid Air-Intake System
Airaid intake systems are specifically designed for many of today's popular off-road vehicles. This system, available for all '05-'06 Ford Super Duty 5.4L trucks, replaces the restrictive and expensive factory intake system with a high-flow, high-filtration, SynthaFlow filter.Located in a heat-resistant housing, the SynthaFlow filter draws in cool air through the factory plumbing while providing additional airflow through the Cool Air Dam at the top. A dramatically improved throttle response is achieved as well as an additional 7 rear-wheel horsepower over stock and an additional 11 lb-ft of torque. Best of all, the system installs in minutes with ordinary handtools and comes with the company's No Hassle Guarantee.
True Flow Air-Intake System
True Flow sealed air-intake systems can provide up to 15 additional horsepower and up to 22 lb-ft of torque to all 5.4L Ford V8 trucks. Each system includes new plastic tubing with powdercoated, seamless steel tube and nylon-reinforced silicone couplers, which replaces the restrictive factory plumbing thereby allowing the improved horsepower and torque.A number of applications are currently available for most late-model domestic trucks and SUVs. As an added bonus, all True Flow intake kits include stainless replacement clamps and all of the necessary hardware and detailed installation instructions. Each system is backed by a lifetime warranty.
Trans-Dapt Torque-Curve MPFI Spacers
Trans-Dapt Performance's MPFI spacers utilize a proprietary design within the spacer's internal structure, so incoming airflow is directed in such a way that turbulence is reduced while at the same time allowing massive torque gains. Fuel economy also benefits from the use of the spacers, that is, if you can resist the temptation to use the additional torque. The MPFI spacers also utilize a special design which eliminates the annoying whistle commonly associated with other MPFI spacers. Spacer kits are vehicle-specific, with kits currently available for all Chevy/GMC, Ford, and Dodge trucks equipped with V8 powerplants. A definite must-have for any towing or heavy-duty application.
MagnaFlow Power Exhaust for the '06 Jeep Commander
If you own a new '06 Jeep Commander outfitted with a 5.7L Hemi, know that additional torque and horsepower are on their way thanks to the new MagnaFlow performance exhaust system. This free-flowing, mandrel-bent tube system has been complemented with MagnaFlow's straight-through muffler design that reduces backpressure and provides a significant increase in horsepower and torque. Each system consists of 2.5-inch mandrel-bent tubing flowing through a large 5x11-inch, 22-inch-long primary muffler and a smaller 5-inch, round secondary muffler for increased sound reduction. The finishing touches come via a polished, 3.5-inch, double-wall stainless steel tip. The dual muffler configuration provides the Commander with a smoother, deeper tone, yet keeps interior cabin sound at a minimum.
