February 2012 Gear: Sierra Designs Jive JacketPosted in Product Reviews on February 1, 2012 Comment (0)
A jacket is like a YJ’s soft top — it has to not just look good and function without fail, it better keep the elements out when you need it to. With this in mind, the Sierra Designs Jive jacket is the ideal outer wear for any outdoor enthusiast.
Whether you enjoy snow ’wheeling, like hiking in higher altitudes, or just need a reliable coat for camping, look no further than the Jive. Below is a look at the features that impressed us enough to give the Jive our stamp of approval.
Manufacturer: Sierra Designs
Weight: 15 oz
Material: Cocona Xcellerator
Under the Hood
This Sierra Designs jacket comes with a good-sized hood that covers your noggin. The front of the hood is almost rooftop-shaped, which forms a mini visor and helps shield your eyes a bit. Plus, there’s an interior tricot chin guard for comfort.
The Jive looks good in any season — whether you need a windbreaker for fall, an outer shell for winter, or a fashionable rain jacket for those spring showers — so it never goes out of style.
The Jive features Cocona fabric that’s highly waterproof yet breathable. There are even armpit zippers to air out excess heat.
Sierra Designs was engineered for the outdoor adventurer. The pockets are above the belly button to maintain accessibility while wearing a rig’s lap belt or a backpack’s waist strap. Also, the cuffs and hem are easy to adjust with Velcro.
Like a Feather
The Jive is also lightweight and flexible, making it comfortable to wear and easy to pack up when the sun starts to shine. (A men’s large is a mere 15 ounces.)
The Jive is fantastic for camping, hiking, or ’wheeling. But there two minor complaints: 1) With an MSRP of $279, it’s as much as some economy lift kits; and 2) its "breathability" is relative, as our sleeves felt a bit humid after wearing it for some time. Still, compared to other jackets that make you feel like you’re suffocating in a garbage bag, the Jive finds a balance between waterproofing, breathability, and aesthetics.
