While we were getting ready to get out to a 4x4 event in the desert, we started thinking about portable refrigeration units to keep our food fresh and beverages cold. We didn't have much cash in our pockets at the time, and therefore a super-expensive unit was out of the question. Luckily, we came across the RC3000, a fridge unit made by the European company Dometic and sold in the U.S. by Lofty Shelters. Those of you out there with RVs or boats might have heard of Dometic before. They've been making good, reliable refrigerators for some time for these applications and are now making portable units that run off alternating current (AC), direct current (DC), and also propane. The propane power is what really caught our attention. And for under $400, how could we resist?
