mickey thompson atz p3 tires 1 There are 24 Grade 8 bolts that hold the powdercoated aluminum ring to the rim, sandwiching the tire bead in between. Forged aluminum wheels are lighter and stronger than their cast counterparts. They can also be welded to and bent back into shape when damaged. This forged Trophy beadlock rim has a 1 5/8-inch-thick center but still weighs in at 33 pounds. The one caveat is that the forged versions are listed for off-road use only. Recognize that sidewall tread? It’s very reminiscent of the original Sidebiters found on the Mickey Thompson Baja Belted tires that have long since been discontinued. Mickey basically invented sidewall tread protection with the Sidebiters on the old Baja Belteds, so it seems fitting to have the same sidewall protection and extra bite on this new class of tire. With only 10 psi, the ATZ P3 did not bulge as much as we thought it would, but then again this red Dodge we put them on weighs less than 5,500 pounds. The thick three-polyester-ply PowerPly sidewall is definitely capable of floating the heavy diesel work trucks that so many guys use as multipurpose trucks today. This particular set we tested had a D load range, but with a 3,525-pound maximum load. The tread pattern of the new ATZ P3 holds some resemblance to that of the original ATZ, but the tread is more aggressive, the voids are bigger, and the compound has changed. The ATZ P3 has the new T4 compound that features a high-silica reinforced tread cap-stock that improves the cut and chip resistance of the tread. It also increases wet-road traction and overall highway performance. We found nothing in the box or on Fuel’s website mentioning the torque spec of the beadlock ring’s bolts, but general consensus in the automotive world dictates that a 5/16-inch beadlock bolt should be tightened to 15 to 18 lb-ft of torque. We took ours to 17 with a digital torque wrench. Muddy trails, wet rock, and rainy highway were not hard to find in the northwest corner of the U.S. In fact, with all the rain that was hitting the northwest in late June, we were crossing small ponds at times. While the ATZ P3 is still not a mud-terrain, it did find enough bite to keep us going through all the muddy trails we tried. There was no hydroplaning in bad rain on wet roads, and the tires handled better than a typical mud-terrain, and more like a mild all-terrain with water channels built into the tread design.

We got to spend a week in the northwest bashing around in some dirt, rock, mud, and sandy trails with our new ATZ P3s. This is definitely a good tire for wet conditions, and one that has enough bite to get us up loose hill climbs with minimal tire slip. While this is not something to replace a hardcore off-road tire, it did exceptionally well—better than any all-terrain tire. This tire is quiet on the highway (tread is still new) and really a pleasure to drive on. Overall performance in the dirt was as to be expected with a tire that falls between a mud-terrain and an all-terrain. This is just the type of tire we look for when shoeing our multipurpose trucks. Whipping the truck with the tires at 10 psi, there were no bead failures or air leaks that we experienced and the sidewalls seemed to barely distort. We did slide off a steep section of rock during a rainstorm, jamming the front tire’s sidewall into rocks and never peeling a bead from the Trophy beadlock’s hold. The sidewalls of the tires look remarkably unscathed, too, considering the sharp rock edges. The PowerPly sidewalls seem to be very thick and very sturdy. mickey thompson atz p3 tires 1
