The tread pattern of the Xtreme MT2 is very similar to that of the original Xtreme MT. The differences mainly being in the slightly improved carcass, the two-step tread design, and the rubber itself. Six plies (three polyester, two steel, one nylon) protect the tread face from punctures. The tread lugs themselves now have a two-step design that gives good bite and keeps a high void ratio, but creates a larger base where the tread lug attaches to the tire carcass. This minimizes tire squirm and increases stability (also improving handling and decreasing tire wear). A single siping line splits each tread block in half, but the rubber itself is also clearly softer than that on the original mud-terrain. The new tread compound is impregnated with silica. That is said to improve wet-road handling and performance in extreme cold temperatures.
