Boots For The Trail
We review a wide variety of products here at 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine. While most of the products we review are designed to improve the ability of your 4x4, some are essentially non-vehicle related and are simply cool items that will likely make your life on the trail a bit easier. Designed to improve the ability of your feet and legs, the LOWA Focus GTX Lo trekking boot is one of those items.
Handcrafted in Germany, the LOWA Focus GTX Lo trekking boot is LOWA's latest, lightweight innovation for trekking highlands and hills. With minimum weight and maximum stability, this awesome boot also provides knee and back support for hauling mid-weight (30 to 50 pound) packs into the backcountry for camping adventures. We've worn the boots during our many 'wheeling trips for hiking up and down trails while snapping photos of 4x4s in action, but they also provide excellent support in the shop during installs when we find ourselves on our feet for hours on end.
We're actually no strangers to LOWA boots as we've been wearing a single pair of an older-model LOWA boot going on eight years. The old pair broke in fast and continues to offer the comfort it did when new—so much so, we weren't really even ready for a new pair. But the new LOWA Focus GTX Lo caught our eyes, and we're quite pleased it did.
While our 8-year-old pair of boots is still wildly comfortable, it turns out they were waning a bit in the support and stability department. We noticed this immediately upon sliding into the new LOWA Focus GTX Lo, which fit our feet perfectly. They offer a stabilized, balanced comfort that still allowed freedom of movement. The self-centering, anatomically contoured tongue makes sliding into these boots an easy task, and the polyurethane midsoles provide better shock absorption and ultimate comfort underfoot. On top of that, the new LOWA Trac Lite outsole features a self-cleaning tread design with increased surface area to provide excellent grip on rocky, uneven terrain.
LOWA offers specialized footwear for hiking, light hiking, speed hiking, trail running, trekking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and backpacking, as well as snow boots to tackle a variety of snow and wet weather activities. We really like our new LOWA Focus GTX Lo boots. In eight years or so, we'll definitely try another pair.
