The high voltage needed for HID lights is created by converting vehicle battery voltage upward using a ballast module that may be located within the lamp housing or mounted external to the housing (as shown here). On initial startup, the ballast voltage can be about 30,000 volts to initiate the arc across the electrode gap, then after a few seconds, it drops to about 3,000 volts to maintain the light output. HID lights can take some seconds to reach full illumination capacity as the discharge process reaches full power.
