The axle’s drum-brake assemblies add nearly 80 pounds per corner and are not remotely practical for our intended use. While the majority of the brake components can be easily unbolted, your options for removing the backing plate is to torch it off entirely or carefully remove (grinder or cutting torch recommended) the rivet heads. Some wheel-mounted brake kits use the original rivet mounting holes for caliper brackets, so be sure to double check before you trim too much.
