The 6.7L Cummins diesel engine is chosen in nearly 90 percent of all Ram Heavy Duty models, and for good reason. It has a lifespan, or major overhaul interval, of approximately 350,000 miles and can be optioned with a six-speed automatic or the six-speed manual (one of the few manual transmission 4x4s still available). To comply with the new '10 1/2 emission standards, the Cummins is outfitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and nitrogen-oxide-reducing absorber catalysts. The 5.7L Hemi V-8 gas engine is available with a five-speed automatic transmission and was redesigned in 2009 with variable valve timing.
