As for the drivetrain, run what you want but pick reliable parts. You might be able to score a 4.0L engine, AW4 tranny, and NP231 out of a Cherokee without too many miles. This would be a very reliable drivetrain for the expedition rig. Another great option would be a TBI Chevy 350 engine since replacement parts can be found everywhere and are relatively cheap. We would also consider a diesel, since diesel fuel can be found almost anywhere in the world. We’d keep the tranny simple and reliable with an older three-speed auto or four-speed manual. No overly complex eight-speed computer-controlled autos for this rig.
