Project Con Artist Part 17 - 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK

Hardtop Insulation For Jeeps: Beat The Heat

By Sean P. Holman, Photography by Sean P. Holman

We love our Jeep Wrangler JK, but we love it just a little less on hot days. While the Wrangler JK's factory top is a step up from previous designs, the radiant heat from the underside of the top can still get pretty hot on those summer days-even with the A/C whirring away at full blast.

We must not be the only ones to notice, because a company called Insul-Liner out of Ocala, Florida, has developed insulation panels that will lower the Jeep's interior temps by blocking the amount of heat that comes through the factory hardtop.

Constructed of closed cell foam, two layers of foil, and a layer of soft insulation, the Insul-Liner panels are then covered in marine-grade vinyl before being bound and stitched. These panels are over an inch thick and fill the underside depressions of the hard top perfectly. The panels we received were very high quality and were shaped as not to interfere with top operation.

While we weren't able to test them in cold weather, Insul-Liner tells us they help to keep the heat in on cold days, too. Don't have a JK? Not to worry, Insul-liner also offers panels for YJs, TJs, and LJs and they come with a 100-percent satisfaction guarantee.

We installed the Insul-liner panels in about an hour taking our time and no drilling is required. Check out what it took to make Project 'Con Artist a little cooler in hot weather.

As much as I'm against hardtops, I have to agree that this product is a really good idea!!  I grew up in the back of a CJ-5 that had an old hardtop on it.  In the summer it was super hot, in the winter we froze, and all year long the top was noisy as heck!!  I know the new fiberglass tops are a world of difference from the old steel tops.... But they all still abide by those rotten principles.
So if you have a hardtop... Use this!!!!!
