October 2002 Reader's Rigs

1979 Chevrolet Front Driver Side View

Dragger
Wayne Yates of Rock Falls, Illinois, owns this hybrid mud racer. The foundation of this beast is a '79 3/4-ton Chevy pickup frame equipped with Dana 44 front and 14-bolt rear axles. Both axles feature 4.10:1 gears and Detroit Lockers to make sure all four 37-inch Boggers get plenty of bite. At the heart of the rig is a 454ci V-8 that has received lots of massaging to produce plenty of ponies. Power is transmitted into a built TH350 trans/NP205 transfer-case combo. The whole creation was then topped off with a body from an '83 Chevy S-10 to help save weight.

The Reader
Years of reading Four Wheeler really paid off for Jesse Moore of Vero Beach, Florida when he bought his '98 Chevy 1/2-ton, as he knew exactly what he wanted to do to it. First went on a 6-inch Superlift suspension system. Next came the 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains on 15x10 American Eagle wheels. Then, to spruce up the appearance of the truck, the windows were tinted. Finally a CD player was put into the cab to provide the tunes.

1970 Jeep CJ 5 Front Passenger Side View

Viva Puerto Rico
It is not too often we get mail from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, but Caguas resident Carlos Polo made us happy by sending us a photo of this fine example of a '70 Jeep CJ-5. It's been in his possession for 32 years. A 3-inch lift makes room for 33x12.50 Couser OTD tires on 15x12 American Eagle aluminum wheels. The drivetrain consists of the stock four-cylinder engine backed up by a T-90 three-speed transmission and the model 18 transfer case. For axles, the stock Dana 44 is found out back, while a Dana 30 rests up front.

 1955 Willys Passenger Side View

Wild Willys
Brian Steele of Silt, Colorado, started out building his '55 Willys pickup by stripping the whole truck to the frame and chopping 18 inches out of the midsection. Western Slope Mechanical then built a custom bed for it. Under the hood rests a Chevy 400ci V-8 that is backed up by a TH350 trans and an NP203 transfer case. Power then goes to front and rear Dana 44s that are fitted with 4.10 gears to turn the 38-inch Super Swampers.

1989 Ford Bronco Front Passenger Side View

Sweet
Jeremy Donlin's '89 Ford Bronco can definitely be called sweet, and not just because he comes from Sugar Land, Texas. Gracing the steed is a 6-inch Skyjacker Class II suspension lift and a 3-inch body lift. Big tires come in the form of 39x18 Mickey Thompson Baja Belteds on 15x14 Mickey Thompson Classic wheels. Some additional help for the 302ci V-8 comes in the form of a Flowmaster 40-series exhaust with chrome tips. Highlights of the interior include a bumping stereo system composed of a Sony receiver, four Pioneer speakers, two 12-inch subwoofers and a 1,000-watt amplifier.

1975 Chevrolet K20 Passenger Side View

New Bow Tie
Mariposa, California resident John Beliera's Chevy K20 might be of a '75 vintage but it has plenty of new parts on it. Under the hood rests a new 350ci V-8 crate engine that runs through the stock transmission and an NP203 transfer case that has been equipped with a part-time kit. New suspension comes in the form of a 4-inch Rancho lift that suspends the truck above a Dana 44 front axle and Corporate 14-bolt rear axle. Tires are new 33-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains. The whole truck was also treated to a fresh coat of gold metallic paint. The result is pretty darned good, especially for a truck that started out as an $800 beater.
