2005 International CXT - International Incident

Say hello to the world's biggest production pickup truck

Shy People Need Not Apply
During our weeklong test, we were utterly amazed by the public's response to the CXT. We've never tested a truck that drew this much reaction. The rig drew a crowd wherever we took it, and not a small crowd either. In Illinois, the rig emptied out a pool hall in Le Roy, caused a traffic jam in the parking lot of a Sullivan's food store in Freeport, drew scores of students at Durand High School, and left the post office customers in the Village of Pecatonica stunned. We answered questions from our local dump-truck-driving township employees. We witnessed people risking frostbite to hang out of their car windows on the interstate to take pictures of the rig with their camera phones. But probably the thing that amazed us the most was the fact that so many folks carry cameras in their cars. We never would've guessed.

Here you can see how the switches for the CXT's four-wheel-drive system look when the system is engaged in 4-Hi. The far-right transfer-case control switch is always in 4-Hi for normal driving, and the system is engaged by simply pressing the front axle switch to engage the air-locking front differential. The front axle can be locked and unlocked when speed is less than 10 mph. One of the cool things about this system is that the driver can select 4-Lo with or without locking in the front axle.

Since compressed air is used substantially throughout the CXT to operate a variety of components, there are two auxiliary air tanks and they're mounted on the passenger side of the vehicle. The air pressure in these tanks is monitored via two dash-mounted gauges.
