In our four-wheel-drive world, we classify rigs by what they're designed to do. We call 'em rockcrawlers, mudders, trail trucks, and so on. In the snowmobiling world, "sleds" are also classified by their purpose. There are mountain sleds, performance sleds, and touring sleds to name a few. One of the most popular models is the crossover. These are machines designed to offer outstanding performance on everything from scenic groomed trails to gnarly unexplored backcountry. The heart of the machine is the massive two-cylinder, two-stroke Suzuki engine with 50mm throttle bodies, multistage APV electronic exhaust valves, Exhaust Pipe Temperature Sensor system, and a pair of spark plugs in each cylinder. Arctic Cat says that electronic wizardry and computer management contribute to its clean emissions and neck-snapping 120 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed through the ACT Drive system. This system replaces the jackshaft, chaincase, chain, and gears of traditional drive systems with a sequence of CNC-machined gears. Why is this good? Well, the result is a lower center of gravity, improved strength, less maintenance, more gear ratios, and reduced engagement rpm. In addition, the ACT Drive allows the relocation of the hydraulic disc brake and rotor to the driveshaft and this improves the brake's effectiveness. Another benefit of the ACT Drive system is that it features pushbutton reverse. We don't need to tell you why that's handy.
The Crossfire chassis utilizes box-aluminum front construction and a 16-inch tunnel housing a 15-inch-wide track. Up front there's a pair of race-style front spindles that not only decrease weight but also increase turning angle by 10 degrees-handy when you're slaloming around trees. Also up front is a flexy suspension that consists of AWS VI double wishbone A-arms with Fox Float shocks and sway bar. The front suspension boasts 9.2 inches of travel. Speaking of travel, the rear suspension has a rockin' 17 inches. This is due to the FasTrack Long-Travel System slide-rail, adjustable torsion springs, and lightweight aluminum Arctic Cat 2-inch-diameter rear shock.
Other cool Crossfire features include flat floorboards with integrated heat exchangers, full instrumentation, removable bellypan side panels, and hand and thumb warmers.
