There are four models in the Kawasaki Teryx recreation utility vehicle (RUV) line, but the flagship of the quartet is the Sport model. What's the big deal about the Teryx Sport? Well, in one word: performance.
The Teryx Sport has a couple of things the other Teryx models don't. Namely, high-performance cast aluminum wheels that remove approximately two pounds of unsprung weight from each corner. Kawasaki says this translates into performance you can feel. The Sport also has high-performance, aluminum-bodied, gas-charged piggyback-reservoir coilover shocks at all four corners, and they're fully adjustable for spring preload, compression damping and rebound damping.
The rear gear case is locked for maximum traction.
Under the hood is the Teryx fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, four-valve-per-cylinder, SOHC, 749cc, 90-degree V-twin engine. This engine has Teryx-sized 34mm throttle bodies, and the digital fuel injection's 32-bit CPU monitors a variety of systems to automatically meter out the ideal amount of fuel. Speaking of the fuel system, the high-pressure fuel pump is located inside the tank, and it features a unique reservoir chamber at the bottom of the fuel pump to help ensure that air does not get into the fuel system. New for 2010 is a larger radiator fan that enhances engine cooling in slow going; a larger-diameter coolant hose that increases coolant flow and overall capacity; and a hinged, forward-tilting front hood that allows quick access to the radiator and front suspension components.
Power is sent through Kawasaki's Automatic Power-Drive System CVT. This system features high and low range, plus Reverse. The transmission uses a high-grade, super-durable belt that's designed to handle the high output of the engine. Unnecessary belt wear is minimized with a system that reduces engine speed if the engine operates at high rpm for more than two seconds while the rear wheels are motionless. When the trail gets tough, there's selectable four-wheel drive. In that vein, the front differential sports a limited-slip unit and the rear axle is locked.
A new, hinged forward-tilting front hood and headlight assembly offer new styling and quic
To expound on the suspension a bit more, those aforementioned piggyback-reservoir shocks are Kayaba units and up front, they work in unison with a dual A-arm setup to provide 71/2 inches of suspension travel. Out back, the Kayabas are mated to an independent suspension, which like the front offers 71/2 inches of travel. There's a rear torsion bar, too, and it helps keep body roll to a minimum. The rig rolls on large 26-inch Maxxis tires that were specifically designed for the Teryx. The rig's forward velocity is reined in via a pair of disc brakes with dual-piston calipers up front and a sealed, oil-bathed, multi-disc unit in the rear.
The cabin features plenty of shoulder and legroom for two adults and has form-fitting bucket seats and retractable three-point seatbelts. Heck, it even has dual retractable cupholders. When/if you feel the need to work, the Teryx Sport can tow up to 1,300 pounds, and the tilting cargo bed has a 500-pound capacity, tie-down hooks in all four corners, and a standard cargo net.
Best of all, Kawasaki notes that even though the Teryx 750 FI 4x4 Sport has a wide-track and big tires, it will still fit in the bed of most fullsize pickup trucks.
