What kind of fuel mileage will it get and how does it tow?
So I weaseled my way behind the wheel of a 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel for a few days. This particular truck is a well-outfitted Laramie Longhorn Edition Crew Cab 4x4 (stock photos of the diesel Ram have also been added). It has an extraordinarily high sticker price (for a ½-ton truck) of $55,735, but just for kicks and grins I went to the Ram Truck website (www.ramtrucks.com/en/ecodiesel/) to build the least expensive EcoDiesel Ram I could muster. Great news is that you can order a strippy truck with the 240hp and 420 lb-ft of torque EcoDiesel V-6. The lowest trim Ram 1500 (Tradesman) is available with the EcoDiesel in a standard cab longbed version for a very reasonable price of $28,180. The diesel engine and required eight-speed tranny tacked on an additional $4,500 to the $24,585 base price.
Word on the street is that hypermiling the EcoDiesel Ram 1500 has netted results of 30 MPG and even up to 40 MPG for those not concerned with frustrating other drivers on the road, although the official numbers have not yet been released. We suspect that MPG numbers similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel (21-city/28-highway) should be easily obtainable.
While some versions of the Ram 1500 diesel have up to a 9,200-pound tow capacity, our particular truck has a tow capacity of 7,300 pounds. Check back soon for our towing impressions and MPG numbers because we’re hitching up the trailer and hitting the road!
