Pictured on the left are the IPF quartz halogen headlamps and 55/60-watt H4 "Magic Bulbs." These items can be installed and used without any modification to the vehicle's factory headlight wiring. On the right are the IPF high-output 90/145-watt halogen bulbs and the required IPF High Performance Wiring Loom.

1: First, remove the stock headlamps. On our TJ this was accomplished by removing the three screws that hold the factory bezel in place. Once this is out of the way, you'll have access to the four screws that hold the headlamp-retaining ring in place. Carefully pull out the headlight and unplug it from the power connection.

2: Remove the sealing boot and install the new H4 bulb in the back of the new IPF headlamp, being careful not to touch the glass portion of the bulb because the oils from your skin will cause premature bulb failure. Slip the retaining clip over the back of the bulb, replace the sealing boot (making sure the word "top" on the boot is positioned upward), replace the power connection, and install the headlamp.

3: If you're using any of the high-performance IPF H4 bulbs you'll need to install the High Performance Wiring Loom. This system bypasses the stock headlight wiring and draws power directly from the battery. The only association the new loom has with the factory harness is to receive instruction from it as to when to activate the headlamps. The first step is to find a suitable mounting location for the relay blocks and fuses. We mounted ours on the firewall.

4: Route the wiring to the headlamps and plug the new connectors onto the back of the bulb. We loosened our TJ's radiator and routed the wiring in front of the upper portion of the radiator where it would be out of the way of the hood latch assembly.

This is the low-beam pattern of the stock, sealed-beam headlamps. Notice the uneven lighting and the lack of definition at the top edge of the beam pattern.

With the IPF headlamps and 55/60-watt bulbs installed, the low-beam pattern has a much more defined horizontal pattern, whiter light, and a brighter amount of light on the right shoulder of the road.

With the IPF 90/145-watt bulbs installed in the IPF headlamps, the low-beam pattern remains the same as the 55/60-watt bulbs, but light intensity is significantly increased.
