The Floorpan & Trunk Restoration...

The Floorpan & Trunk Restoration Kit comes with one bottle of Engine Clean, one bottle of Metal Ready, and everything seen here. We used the kit to kill typical floorpan rust on a 73 Scout II before it spread to the body mounts.

The first step is to grind...

The first step is to grind off the surface rust down to the bare metal. The holes will get larger as you remove the rust, showing the severity of the damage. We used a drill motor with a wire wheel to do the grinding as well as a screwdriver to scrape the tight areas. Vacuum the area thoroughly to remove all loose particles.

The POR-15 Engine Clean is...

The POR-15 Engine Clean is a degreaser. Mix the Engine Clean with hot water and brush it on thoroughly, being sure to get it in all the cracks and crevices. Rinse the entire area and wait until its completely dry. A heat gun can be used to speed up this process.

Spray the area to be restored...

Spray the area to be restored with the Metal Ready, and keep it wet for 20 to 30 minutes. Heavy rust removal will take longer. Rinse once more with water and let dry. It is very important the metal is completely dry before you apply the POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint. A dryer also can be used at this stage.

While youre waiting...

While youre waiting for the metal to dry, cut a piece of the reinforcing fabric and lay it aside. Once the area is dry, brush on either the black or silver POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint to the top and bottom of the hole. Be sure to use gloves when applying the paint, because its close to impossible to remove from your skin.

Next, lay the fabric over...

Next, lay the fabric over the hole while the paint is still wet. Soak it with more paint, brushing it over the entire surface generously. The paint will dry in four or five hours, and the fabric will be permanently bonded to the metal, creating a porcelain-like appearance. If possible, let it dry overnight.

Finally, use the Epoxy Putty...

Finally, use the Epoxy Putty to fill in any small holes, hide pits, smooth out the texture of the fabric, or to add a smooth appearance. The putty is nontoxic and can be mixed with your bare hands.

After the POR-15 Epoxy Putty...

After the POR-15 Epoxy Putty dries, you can sand it smooth to prepare it for paint. The kit provides you with a can of ChassisCoat Black, but just about any paint will do. From what weve seen, its tough and seems to do a great job of defeating the destructive forces of rust.
Its like a war zone out there. When you least expect it, the enemy creeps up on you and blows you away. Given a little time, a little moisture on some metal will allow that dreaded enemy to turn your 4x4 into a battlefield filled with land mines that will ultimately destroy everything. An excellent combatant for the ravages of rust is POR-15, a product weve seen stop rust holes in their tracks.
