The Wet Dream...To Keep Going

Don’t come to a stop because of moisture

Waterproofing the ignition in general is a must, and a major concern is usually the distributor. This housing has been drilled and tapped to accept a fitting (center) for a vent hose. Notice also the silicone-sealed dwell adjustment hex to the right.

It’s usually the ignition that quits first when an engine stalls due to water, but there are cures. Jacobs’ Omni Torquer isn’t just a great ignition--it&8217s a great waterproof ignition. Used together with Jacobs plug wires and a properly prepped distributor, chances are good that your engine will keep running just fine even when submerged.

This air intake is a good example of a well-designed factory setup. Air enters from a relatively high point above and behind the headlight, goes into the air cleaner from the bottom (which allows for some water ingestion without soaking the filter), and enters the engine via a plenum. Converting to a snorkel setup would also be very simple with the factory plenum as a starting point.

One way to minimize the possibility of water-induced distributor problems is to use a distributor with widely spaced terminals such as the GM HEI. Performance Distributors even makes one for Ford engines. Pictured is an MSD Pro-Cap, which is made to fit most Pro-Billet distributors and has a full 2 inches between the terminals.

New from Edelbrock, PowerBond is a self-sealing wrap that forms a waterproof rubber. This tape can be used to seal off several things (keeping fluids either in or out) as long as you can wrap the PowerBond around them. ACCEL offers Pro Tape, which is a self-vulcanizing silicone tape made especially for plug wires but can also be used elsewhere.

To get an idea of what really works under water, check out a military vehicle. While the threaded-on plug wires, special spark plugs, and distributor cap on this M38 do a great job of keeping water at bay, this kind of stuff isn&8217t all that easy to come by--if it even exists for your engine. Still, we can learn from observing.

Hella makes the Vision Plus headlights that are said to be 50 percent more effective than standard sealed beams on low beam, and just a little silicone around the seal for the bulb can make them waterproof too. Hella is also releasing a new line of LED lights, some of which are shown here, that are all waterproof. Actually, the ones on the right are part of the Hellamarine line, while the automotive taillight to the left is part of the Dura Led series.

Intended to keep rain from entering the tranny, this old cat-food can and silicone setup can actually help in deep-water situations, because an air pocket will form in the can. Terminating vent hoses in an upside-down container also works well and has the added bonus of collecting the fluids if the vehicle turns upside down on the trail.

Not only is this Hella HID work light waterproof, it’s also incredibly bright. It&8217s maybe even bright enough that it can help you avoid driving into deep water altogether--but if you do, at least the light is waterproof.

Grote also makes an amber 4-inch LED, which is part of the Super Nova line. Like all LED lights (that we know of), they’re completely waterproof in addition to being highly efficient and last darn near forever.

Automatic transmissions do not work well at all with water in them, yet the factory vent on this TH 400 (in a Jeep 4WD application, no less) is only a tube at about 4 inches above crankshaft level. Look carefully for flaws like this when crawling under the vehicle, then extend the vents with hoses that reach above the predicted water level and then some.
