But if you’re like us, finding the time to maintain the exterior of your rig just isn’t happening. Heck, we can hardly find time to wash our rig. Fortunately, there are options to make the job thorough and quick.

We recently received a call from the folks at Shurhold Industries. It’s like the company was telepathic or something, because it was really beginning to bug us that our seven year-old Dodge Power Wagon was beginning to show the effects of virtually no exterior maintenance. Shurhold is a Florida-based company that has been around for 39 years and it specializes in designing and manufacturing innovative specialty care and accessory products for the marine, RV, and auto industries. Shurhold offered to send us several items from its product line so we could show our Power Wagon some love. Here’s what we used and the outcome.

The first thing we did was wash the truck (which is kind of a foreign concept for us). Per the instructions we mixed three ounces of Brite Wash soap with two gallons of water and rubbed off months of slime. Normally we don’t get too excited about brushes and stuff, but we have to say that the adjustable Telescoping Handle with Deck Brush is pretty cool and it worked great for getting to the hard-to-reach windshield and hood on our lifted Power Wagon. It sped up the overall washing process, too. The brush has split-end fibers that hold ample soap and water so we weren’t driving the dirt into our trucks paint. One of the handle’s cool features is a quick-release system that allows for easy removal and installation of the brush or any one of Shurhold’s 40 different attachment heads.

With our Power Wagon’s finish clean and dry we removed the Dual Action Polisher from its carrying bag, attached the 6 1/2-inch acrylic/twisted wool Buff Magic Pad (it uses a hook-and-loop fastening system), and went to work on our rig’s finish with the Buff Magic surface reconditioner and deoxidizer. The Dual Action Polisher eliminates the “elbow grease” needed and it did the job quicker and more thoroughly than we could have. The polisher oscillates and rotates the pad on varying orbits and the machine has six speed settings from 2,500 rpm (for waxing and buffing) to 6,500 rpm (for removing paint defects and swirls). It’s also worth noting that Buff Magic has many other uses including the restoration of plastic headlamp housings.

The next step was to apply the Pro Polish. It’s a surface cleaner, sealant, and polish with UV inhibitors. We applied the Pro Polish by hand and then let it dry.

We then attached the 6 1/2-inch Pro Polish pad (it’s a black foam finessing pad) on the Dual Action Polisher and used it to remove the Pro Polish. Once again, the Dual Action Polisher did all the hard work. Another method is to apply the Pro Polish with the pad and Dual Action Polisher.

The final step was to clean all of our trucks black plastic trim with SMC cleaner and then we applied Serious Shine quick detailer. Serious Shine cleans, polishes, and protects virtually any solid surface and it doesn’t leave a greasy residue.

Bottom Line
As you can see in these before and after photos, the Shurhold products worked wonders on our Power Wagon’s finish. Look at how mirror-like our rig’s finish is in the after photo when compared to the before photo. In addition, we were able to eliminate many of the scratches that had accumulated over the years. The shine looks great, but we were even more interested in the practical aspect of protecting the finish on our Midwest-based truck from the road salt and mud that is inherent to the area. With that said, we were pleased when a couple of days after we used the Shurhold products we got our truck muddy off-road and were amazed at how easily the mud rinsed off the polished finish and there was no mud staining. As a bonus, even after buffing and polishing our big Quad Cab Power Wagon we still have approximately 80 percent of the 22-ounce Buff Magic and 16-ounce Pro Polish remaining so we should be able to buff and polish at least four more vehicles, depending on their size, before needing to purchase more chemicals.
