Extreme towing! Here is our test mule pulling two grain trailers with about 200 bushels of wheat in each. At 60 pounds per bushel, that's about 24,000 pounds of wheat, plus the weight of each trailer (1,500 pounds) and the truck tipped the scales at 7,345 (6,345 and 1,000 pounds of tractor weights in the back). Grand total: 34,345 pounds! Here we tried to get it moving in two-wheel drive with an open diff in the soft dirt of the field. No go-one-wheel drive. Later, with the Truetrac installed, there was some spinning (from two tires this time) but the truck could get the load moving in two-wheel drive. Either way, without the extra weight in back, it was a no-go. The diesel truck is very nose-heavy and these types of wagons add no tongue weight.

Our first step was to have Sarka Laser Cutting and Fabrication weld an Auto Meter 1/8-inch pipe plug bung onto the factory diff cover. A small hole is drilled and then the part is MIG-welded into place. We placed the bung in the same relative position as it is on the Mag-Hytec cover-at the top-so we would be reading oil temp the same way on both covers. Mag-Hytec says that placing the sender at the top, where the hottest oil is flung off the ring gear, gives you a truer picture of diff oil temp.

The Auto Meter differential temperature gauge kit came with a gauge that reads up to 250 degrees, a sending unit, and various adapters. If you want a higher scale, you can get one that reads up to 300 degrees, but it isn't marked "Diff." The diff-temp unit is offered in several gauge styles.

We mounted the diff-temp gauge in an Auto Meter pod under the dash. The wiring is straightforward: a fused 12-volt source on the run circuit, a feed from the dashlights, a ground, and the wire to the sender. We found that, because of the rear springs being mounted in rubber bushings, we needed a ground wire from the axle to the chassis to get a reading.

The Mag-Hytec is cast in A356-T6 aluminum and powdercoated. Each one is individually numbered too. It comes with a drain plug built in (complete with a magnet) and a top-loading dipstick, with a hole big enough to use as an oil fill...

...The dipstick is magnetic, so it also collects microscopic iron particles. The cover comes standard with a 1/8-inch pipe port for use with a diff-temp sending unit.

It's a thing of beauty installed. Stainless steel Allen-head bolts are used as fasteners and the cover has a rubber O-ring type gasket. Note how we routed the wires up along the brake lines. Our truck has the load-type brake proportioning valve, which we found would not directly attach to its original location. We used that as an excuse to simply eliminate the non-op unit anyway. To retain it would require some adaptation to the mounting brackets.
