Automatic Transmission Fluids Ford F150
There are three keys to a long-lasting automatic transmission. First, don't exceed the physical limits with too much power or too heavy a load. Next, keep it cool. An everyday 150 degrees (F) or less (cooler line "out" temperature) is ideal, and under 225 degrees is a good upper target for sustained hard work. Both of these are pretty hard to attain, but under 200 everyday is acceptable, and about 250 degrees should be the absolute sustained limit. Short spurts higher aren't a big deal, but every minute over about 200 degrees is shortening the life of the fluid by oxidation. Finally comes filtration, and a good primer on that is right here.
For all of its complexity, the automatic transmission has been almost forgotten in the oil filtration department. For many of its 70-plus years, minimal filtration was considered "good enough." No longer. Today's electronically controlled transmissions are much more sensitive to lubricant contaminants, yet the OE filtration systems haven't evolved all that much. And if you think the auto trans is forgotten, realize your power steering has no filter at all.

Automatic Transmission Fluids Fitran Cutaway
The best of the current breed of pan filters can filter at 60 to 80 microns. This Filtran cutaway shows a double layer of Microfelt material. This style is preferable to the screen type, though it's not likely you could change a screen unit over to this.
Fluids and Contamination
The majority of automatics have only a screen or panel filter on the pump suction in the pan. Modern pan filters average about 100-micron filtering efficiency (see the sidebar), with older screen filters as poor as 200. For comparison, an average engine oil filter can remove particles about 25 microns in size. In nearly 30 years of study, engineers John Eleftherakis and Ibrahim Khalil defined the failure modes of automatics due to contaminants and determined the typical types and allowable amounts of contaminants. The results of those studies have been published in various Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) technical papers since 1990.

Automatic Transmission Fluids Installing Magnefine
The Magnefine couldn't be easier to install. Cut out a section of cooler line and install it with the hoses, clamps and tubing supplied. We recommend using the optional Quik Fittings (red arrows), which have a ferule fitting that seals to the tubing and a barbed fitting for the hose. This will offer a more leak-free seal. We replaced the screw clamps with constant tension types. Unless you are starting with a new truck, the best place to install the Magnefine is in the return line.

A cutaway of the Magnefine shows the 35-micron filter with a built-in bypass valve so flow won't be stopped if the filter plugs. Up by the magnet (red arrow) is a flow director that makes sure all the oil passes closely by the magnet to catch the ferrous particles.

The Racor filter contains a lot of media. In an application where the fluid had been changed to remove Type 1 contamination, this filter could go a long way in service. Construction is top-notch, with a built-in bypass valve.

Automatic Transmission Fluids Racor Kit
The basic Racor kit includes what you see here. You can add the ready-made hoses Racor offers in assorted lengths and with Quik Fittings on one end, or you can make up hoses of your own. The fittings supplied are the JIC type, with which you use bulletproof hydraulic-style hoses.
