When the folks at ARB set out to build a better trail refrigerator, their goal was simple: One-up the quarter-century-old design they already offered. The revamp would require inclusion of a whole assortment of up-to-date techno-gadgetry, along with a sleek redesigned exterior. The intent was to improve usability while also adding function and efficiency. The new design also needed to be lighter in weight while adding additional carrying capacity at the same time. To achieve this goal ARB worked with Danfoss Refrigeration, known globally as a leading supplier of compressors and automated solutions to the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. The result of this partnership netted ARB one of the most efficient and quiet compressor units available today. We tested a 50-quart version recently and are pleased to report outstanding results.
 The first observation we made...  The first observation we made upon opening our new ARB Fridge Freezer unit was the new user-friendly, forward-facing thermostat control interface with digital display-an obvious improvement over the previous generation's LCD interface. |  The second thing we observed...  The second thing we observed about the new ARB Fridge Freezer was the lightweight two-piece injection-molded lid with its incorporated O-ring gasket. This lid features a much more durable latch and hinge mechanism and is made from UV-stable plastic. We like the fact that the lid is easily removable for cleaning purposes. |  One smart feature of the optional...  One smart feature of the optional transit bag is the Velcro pocket pouch designed to keep both of the unit's cords neatly organized and available at all times. |
 We compared the internal volume...  We compared the internal volume of the old ARB fridge unit to the new one and found that the new version had improved internal capacity by just over three quarts. The interior of the new model also seemed much easier to clean thanks to its powdercoated zinc steel cabinet shell. There is also a drain plug at the bottom of the new unit, which makes clean-up a breeze. |  The back of the Fridge Freezer...  The back of the Fridge Freezer incorporates low-profile power plugs to make packing easier. As you can see, the unit will operate on either 12-24 volts DC or 100-240 volts AC. The unit also features a user-accessible fuse just in case a problem should occur. Power consumption hovers right around 1.35 amps per hour intermittently when connected to a 12-volt DC source. |  Perhaps our favorite feature...  Perhaps our favorite feature of the new ARB Fridge Freezer is the new interior LED cabinet light. This makes searching for a midnight snack while half-awake in the woods a breeze. The LED only turns on when the lid is opened, and it is completely waterproof. |
 The removable internal divider...  The removable internal divider basket helps aid organization of food and beverages. |  Another option we like about...  Another option we like about the new ARB Fridge Freezer is the durable transit bag that helps prevent scrapes and scratches while loaded in a vehicle. The soft insulated material shell fits snugly around the powdercoated metal exterior of the unit and is easy to remove by simply releasing the Velcro tabs around its perimeter. We suspect that this bag would also aid slightly in keeping the unit cool on hot days. |  We mocked up the new Roller...  We mocked up the new Roller Slide mounting system in the back of a Jeep Scrambler to get an idea of how it works. As you can see, the system enables easy access to the fridge's interior while securely supporting the 53 pound unit, plus whatever is stored inside. ARB also offers an optional tie-down kit as a less-permanent mounting solution. We like the fact that the Roller Slide comes with a durable and attractive metallic gray powdercoat finish. |
ARB sent us the optional Roller...
ARB sent us the optional Roller Slide mounting system to make accessing the unit much easier when out on the trail. This well thought-out part features a roll-out tray that locks in both the open and closed positions. The sliding tray glides on sealed roller bearings for smooth operation and the bearings are even adjustable to prevent rattling and to compensate for the inevitable wear and tear from years of heavy use. The Fridge Roller Slide measures 29 x 20 inches, and the tray is pre-drilled for the foot patterns of the ARB Fridge Freezer.
We must admit we were impressed from the start with ARB's execution on this one. The new and improved Fridge Freezer is literally light years ahead of the old model it replaces. It may be slightly more expensive than comparable units, but you really do get what you pay for in this case. We love the fact that it'll continue running at extreme angles of up to 30 degrees, and that it won't run your battery down when you forget and leave it running in the back of your rig. Its no-ice operation means you don't have to worry about how cold it gets at night; you will always be able to reach in and grab whatever you're after, and the easy-to-configure interior simply rocks. We found no problem packing enough 12-ounce soft drinks to hydrate a family of three for a two-day-long trail ride and campout. All in all, ARB has produced a user-friendly product that is sure to last another quarter century. We love it so much, we find ourselves plugging it in as extra cold storage for social gatherings and parties, too.
