An initial glance at Center Line's new bead-lock wheel probably won't reveal that it's a modular construction, or even a bead lock, for that matter. A closer look gives several clues to its three-piece design, but nowhere near enough to see the real beauty of this new concept. That it is a forged aluminum wheel is very obvious.

Center Line Ice Run Flat Wheel O Ring
Removing the outer section shows the O-ring that seals the wheel between those two parts. The "Outboard-street side" sticker is to aid in assembly, so you don't accidentally get the white sidewall letters out. Next to it is the slot for the tire-pressure monitor, making the wheel 2007-compliant.

Center Line Ice Run Flat Wheel Rim Botls
The very shiny (and very heavy) I.C.E. wheel comes assembled with four of the 20 stainless steel 1/2-inch bolts holding it together. Also included are an Allen wrench, an industrial-strength center cap, and tire mounting instructions, both printed and on a CD.

From left to right, the outer piece that the outer tire bead seats on. It's the shiny part when looking at the wheel in normal fashion. Next is the wheel center, with indexing flanges for the inner and outer sections, looking like a wide band. When the bolts are tightened, the outer tire bead gets clamped between this and the outer piece. Those holes allow air to flow freely to the valve stem and (if so equipped) tire-pressure monitor. Lastly, there's the inner section which the bolts thread into, and the wheel studs go through. Since there is no need for a regular drop center, the shape of the inner section lets a deflated tire fold in, but not get out of shape or come off the rim.

1 Mounting a tire on this run-flat wheel may seem as complicated as the wheel itself, but in reality it's very simple and fast. It's actually harder to get the tire back off. And as you'll see, the wheel itself is also quite straightforward to assemble. Begin with lubing the inner tire bead and placing the centersection in the tire. Try not to use soap as suggested in the instructions, but real tire lube. Next, make sure the O-ring is in its groove and lay the tire over the inner section, seen in the background.

2 Align the bolt holes in the two sections, set the O-ring in the centersection (it is not installed in this picture) and then lube the outer tire bead. By now you've surely noticed the difference between real modular wheels and what some of your friends call modular wheels.

3 Place the outer section on top with the bolt holes aligned, then start a bolt in every fifth hole. Be careful, as you are running stainless bolts into aluminum. Finish up by getting all 20 bolts in and torque them (in a criss-cross pattern) to 80-100 lb-ft. That's it. Pump the tire up and go. It was the fastest bead-lock tire mounting we've ever done.
