Squint your eyes, maybe pretend a little, and you almost can imagine that our Wrangler might be an MB traversing this same beach almost 60 years ago as U.S. forces took part in the greatest amphibious landing in history.

In the square across from the Hotel Patton in Avranches we encountered this Sherman tank, along with a memorial to General George Patton. It was from Avranches that Patton launched his dash across France.

These artillery emplacements at Longues, between Omaha and Gold beaches, contain powerful guns that could lob a 152mm shell at ships more than 12 miles offshore, or to either Omaha Beach to the west or Gold Beach to the east.

Inside the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum, under draped parachutes, we found this wonderful collection of WWII-era American vehicles.

The American Cemetery, near Colleville-sur-Mer, contains row after row of markers, in perfect precision, attesting to the sacrifice of almost 10,000 Americans buried here.

This monument in the German Cemetery marks the final resting place of Freidrich Boshalt, who fell during the Allied assault on June 6, 1944, and also an unidentified German soldier who is buried alongside him.

The little church in Coleville-sur-Mer, immediately inland from Omaha Beach. Imagine German sniper rifles poking out from the upper portals, and you’ll begin to see what Allied troops saw when they were here 58 years ago.

This is the famed church on the square in Ste. Mère Église, where the canopy of paratrooper John Steele’s parachute snagged on the church tower, stranding him there, high above the ground and above the fight, for hours. Today, a mannequin paratrooper hangs there.

Today, Colleville-sur-Mer is a peaceful and sleepy country village as far removed from the ravages of war as it possibly could be.

The Airborne Museum in Ste. Mère Église is home to many stunning exhibits related to D-Day, including this MB. Our author checks it out for authenticity.

On the day we visited the site of the famed Pegasus Bridge, members of the 6th Airborne Division, sporting their maroon berets, were enjoying a luncheon reunion at the Café Gondrée, hosted by Madame Arlette Pritchett-Gondrée.
