It’s finally here: The moment you’ve all been waiting for. The main event at Top Truck Challenge is a culmination of all the gnarly wheeling throughout the week rolled into one quarter mile climb up a tight narrow canyon filled with deep pools of mud, slippery off-camber rock walls and generally stuff that could bring any wheeled vehicle to a dead halt. There’s a reason we call it the Tank Trap and there’s a reason we save the best for last.

Once competitors have survived the entire week of Top Truck Challenge obstacles, they usually decide to go for the glory or go home with broken parts. There’s no holding back at this event. Even the most conservative competitor will mash the loud pedal and tear up their rig’s body to make it to the top of the Tank Trap. There is nothing quite like the Tank Trap and as the name suggests, even a tank would have a hard time trying to work its way up the narrow canyon.

Competitors are allowed 30 minutes to complete the Tank Trap and while that seems like a long time to traverse a quarter mile, consider that it’s only 1,800 seconds to move through 1,320 feet of off-road hell and, oh yeah, the course also climbs 195 feet in elevation from start to finish. That’s right, an average of 1.36 seconds per foot and when the going gets tough, the seconds start ticking faster. If the deep pools of mud don’t stop you, the narrow rock canyon above hole 2 might. The narrow rock canyon has been known to flip rigs on their side or at the very least tear up some sheet metal. Suffice it to say that this is one event where winching strategies can make or break a good run and driver and spotter communication can make all the difference between making it to the finish or timing out.

Grab a drink and sit back and relax because you’re about to watch Part 1 of the wildest wheeling action straight from the Tank Trap at Top Truck Challenge 2014!
