Until you actually see King's Power Wagon in action, it's hard to see what makes this beat-up old iron so unusual. With 36 inches of adjustability up front, Elmo's selectable wheelbase arrangement arms King for virtually any off-highway situation-especially those that would stop static-wheelbase rigs dead in their tracks. Items such as an exterior roll cage and a Warn 8274 winch maintain the function-over-form principle King so proudly embodies.

Elmo
Just when you thought you have seen everything, along comes Roger King and his '64 Dodge Power Wagon. Equipped with an über-flexible coil spring suspension, four-wheel steering, and a hydraulically adjustable wheelbase (not a typo), this unique build epitomizes innovation. Additionally, the rig sports a propane-powered 408ci Mopar mill that puts out an estimated 400 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. King is no stranger to TTC-style competition, either. With an extensive background in fabrication and metalwork, this Tennessee-based tool dealer's creation is unlike anything we've seen before. Tipping the scales at nearly 9,500 pounds, we are not surprised that TTC Truck Class fans wanted to see King's heavyweight compete.

A stoutly trussed 21/2-ton Rockwell resides up front and doubles as a mounting platform for the massive 3-inch-diameter double-ended steering ram. King added a dual-piston front pinion brake setup made by SK. A close look reveals the highly-effective interface that is said to make life easy whenever actuated. The axle features a full spool, and Ouverson 2-inch Violator axleshafts provide King the confidence he needs to drop the hammer when the going gets tough.

Roger King, Team #39

  • Most looking forward to: "Tank Trap. I think it will be survival of the fittest. I look forward to taking my punishment."
  • Not looking forward to: "Mud Pit. My truck is not set up for mud and I have no idea how to drive in it."
  • Playing in his iPod/CD player: "Wilhelm Richard Wagner (Flight of the Valkyries), Carl Orff ('O Fortuna' from his elegant Carmina Burana), Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1812 Overture)."
  • King says: "I love fourwheeling."

  • 129 1011 Roger King 1964 Dodge Power Wagon Rear Axle And Rancho Shocks
Featuring componetry that is similar to that of the front axle, the rear 21/2-ton Rockwell also houses a stout hydraulic ram and a full spool outfitted with Ouverson shafts. However, the steering arrangement is further fortified by a home-brew slide-rack setup that helps protect the single-ended ram while maintaining critical steering arm angles throughout the range of motion. A center-mounted wire rope limits droop while a pair of Rancho 5000s dampen the bumps.

Inside the cab, King's minimalist approach is carried over. A factory steel dash houses a small assortment of gauges and switchgear to cover the basics. Nothing fancy to speak of, except for a lever that controls the hydraulic-powered deployment of Elmo's extended wheelbase system. A pair of Corbeau suspension seats ensure occupant comfort while a lack of doors and glass provide ample visibility from inside the cab.

Simplicity was a top priority when it came to King's engine and drivetrain. The rig is powered by propane, which eliminates the need for a fuel pump, injection system and filtration. The Mopar 360 V-8 was bored to 408 cubic inches and freshened with a set of Eagle forged pistons and a mild Lunati camshaft. King relies on a good old-fashioned Impco vaporizer and tried-and-true mechanical ingenuity throughout.
