Top Truck Challenge 2011 Competitors: Show & Tell

The core of Timson’s buggy is a Blue Torch Fabworks chassis that contains only the necessities. There’s no frou-frou doo-dad’s residing on this machine. Timson created the exterior bodywork, which is a combination of custom aluminum panels and a steel hood and grille from a ‘87 Jeep YJ. A Warn 9,500-pound winch resides up front and a Warn 3,500-pound winch is bolted at the rear. The rig rolls on 54-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claw tires that are mounted to 14-inch-wide Stazworks double beadlock wheels. Here’s an interesting fact: The wheelbase is almost the same length as the chassis.

Buggy class: Check, Please
Fabrication plant manager Corey Timson seems to have all the bases covered with his incredible YJ buggy. Let’s see: Four hundred-horse big-block engine? Check. Beefed Rockwell axles? Check. Insane approach and departure angles? Check. A collection of fluid coolers? Check. It was wearing 49-inch IROKs when you voted it in, but now it’s running 54-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claws.

Timson narrowed the 2½-ton Rockwell axles by 7 inches. This allows him to run the same short-side Ouverson Engineering 2-inch-diameter Violator axleshaft on both sides of each axle. Other axle mods include Ouverson Super 8 hubs, Ouverson Super 8 disc brakes with six-piston calipers, and an Ouverson Violator locker. The suspension uses a triangulated four-link system with Fox remote-reservoir coilovers, Timbren rubber bumpstops, and a center-mounted limiting strap. The front tires are pointed via a PSC hydraulic steering system.

  • Most looking forward to: “Mini Rubicon. Rocks are just my thing.”
  • Not looking forward to: “Tow Test. I can’t get the sound of snapping steel out of my head when I think of it.”
  • Playing in his iPod/CD player: “Uncle Kracker.”

  • At the rear of the buggy is a narrowed 2½-ton Rockwell axle that is set up similar to the front with same-size Ouverson Violator axleshafts, Ouverson Super 8 hubs, Ouverson Super 8 disc brakes with six-piston calipers, and a Ouverson Violator locker. Also like the front, the rear suspension utilizes Fox remote-reservoir coilovers and a center-mounted limiting strap. There’s a single center-mounted Timbren rubber bumpstop. The rear electro-proportional hydraulic steer setup is by Machinery Repair Technologies.

  • Function remains supreme in the design of the interior. Timson and his passenger sit on Corbeau seats and are held in place by G-Force Racing Gear safety harnesses. Timson grasps a Grant steering wheel and shifts the transmission using an Art Carr shifter. He controls the transfer case and rear steering via custom levers. Monitoring important engine information is easy thanks to Auto Meter rpm, water temperature, oil pressure, and voltage gauges that are all mounted in the custom dash. Located directly behind the passenger area is a chassis-mounted Summit engine radiator with a pair of Flex-A-Lite 16-inch-diameter electric fans.

  • Making an estimated 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque is a fuel-injected 8.1L big-block V-8 engine out of a ’04 Chevy Suburban 2500. It uses a Fuel Injection Specialties wiring harness and has Hedman headers, 3½-inch-diameter exhaust, and a Flow Master muffler. A Derale cooler with 8-inch fan cools the power steering fluid and engine oil. A pair of RedTop Optima batteries are mounted underhood as well. Power from the big V-8 is sent to a TH400 transmission that has been upgraded with 4L80E sprags, a shift kit, and a factory Dodge cooler. A StaK Monster three-speed transfer case splits the power to the Rockwell’s via custom driveshafts from Drive Products that have 1410 U-joints.
