Shane Vizenor: 2009 Lil' Nasty Buggy

Top Truck Challenge 2011 Competitors: Show & Tell

The rig’s chassis began life as a Campbell Enterprises unit, but it was heavily modified by Vizenor for the big-block engine and the four-link coilover suspension. After the modifications were complete, he powdercoated it Gun Metal Pearl. The body skin kit is also from Campbell Enterprises and, like the chassis, it was heavily modified by Vizenor. Like the color of the body panels? They’re 2010 Camaro Synergy Green. Gone are the 47-inch tires you may remember from the rig’s April issue debut, and now the rig is rolling on 54-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. The wheels are 14-inch-wide Marsh Racing double beadlock wheels. Other exterior mods include Hella driving lights, LED tail and rock lights, a front Warn 9,000-pound winch with Warn synthetic rope, and a rear Warn 8,000-pound winch with Viking synthetic rope.

Buggy class: Lil’ Nasty
You made this custom buggy, owned by Shane and Jessilyn Vizenor, the number one vote-getter in the Buggy Class. Here’s a shocker: This incredible buggy was built in only six weeks. The big-block, Rockwell-shod machine offers a glimpse into how mechanic Shane Vizenor’s over-the-top mind works, and it’s a beautiful thing.

The Details

  • Owner name/city: Shane and Jessilyn Vizenor/Fisher, MN
  • Occupation: Mechanic
  • Vehicle model: 2009 “Li’l Nasty” buggy
  • Estimated value: $60,000
  • Engine/aspiration: 502ci Chevy Ram Jet V-8/fuel-injection, Sanderson headers, Dynomax muffler
  • Transmission: PTC TH400
  • Transfer case: Atlas II 4.3:1 2-spd
  • Suspension (f/r): Four-link, King 2.5 remote-reservoir coilovers, King 2.5 bumpstops/four-link, King 2.5 remote-reservoir coilovers, King 2.5 bumpstops
  • Axles (f/r): 2½-ton Rockwell, Ouverson Violator 2-in axleshafts, Ouverson pinion brake, Ouverson Violator locker/2½-ton Rockwell, Ouverson Violator 2-in axleshafts, Ouverson pinion brake, Ouverson Violator locker
  • Axle ratio: 6.72:1
  • Wheels: 20x14-in steel Marsh Racing beadlock
  • Tires: 54x19.50-20 Mickey Thompson Baja Claw TTC

A slew of Ouverson Engineering products are integrated into the front 2½-ton Rockwell axle. The list includes 2-inch-diameter Violator axleshafts, pinion brake, and Violator locker. The flexy four-link suspension uses King 2.5 remote-reservoir coilovers, King 2.5 bumpstops, and a Currie Antirock sway bar. Vizenor can easily point the front wheels thanks to a PSC hydraulic steering system that is powered by its own power steering pump.

Shane Vizenor, Team #11

  • Most looking forward to: “I’d have to say the Tank Trap. It’s known by everyone for its off-the-wall craziness. There’s only one time a year that trail gets as gnarly as people see it, and to get the opportunity to run it in its ideal condition is by far an honor.”
  • Not looking forward to: “The Mud Pit is probably the worst. I hate mud. Although that’s where I and many others have started, running mud holes. I’d rather drive around it, ha ha.”
  • Playing in his iPod/CD player: “Rev It Up And Go-Go, Jesse James Dupree.”

  • At the back of the buggy, the setup is almost identical to the front. There’s a 2½-ton Rockwell axle with Ouverson Violator axleshafts, pinion brake, and Violator locker, as well as a four-link suspension with King 2.5 remote-reservoir coilovers, King 2.5 bumpstops, and a Currie Antirock sway bar. Also like the front, it has a PSC hydraulic steering setup that is fed by its own engine-driven power steering pump.

  • The custom interior dash design is sans sharp edges and not hard to look at. Only the most basic of controls and gauges are utilized. They include ignition; winch controls; E-brake control; power steering and transmission electric fan control; and oil pressure and water temperature gauges. The center console houses the shifters for the transmission and transfer case as well as the rear steer control. Other interior features include a Line-X’d floor and Corbeau seats with five-point Simpson harnesses. Directly behind the passenger area is the Be Cool engine radiator with dual 16-inch electric fans and in front of that is a Derale cooler with 8-inch electric fan for the transmission cooler. The radiator is flanked by the custom 17-gallon fuel cell.

  • Five hundred and two cubic inches of fuel-injected, big-block goodness are what propels the little buggy. It’s a GM Ram Jet crate engine that has been fitted with Sanderson headers that flow into a single exhaust with Dynomax mufflers. Those valve cover numbers? A good-natured ruse. In front of the engine is a Derale cooler with 8-inch electric fan and it’s used to cool the power steering. Mated to the engine is a Performance Torque Converters TH400 transmission with manual valve body. Behind that is an Atlas 4.3:1 two-speed transfer case.
