When the Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road’s Ultimate Adventure heads to Placerville, California, you can bet that there is one trail the group is going to hit; that’s right the ultimate off-road trail known as the Rubicon. Those who have seen all of the UA videos multiple times will know that this is not the first time the UA has traversed this hallowed trail, but it is the first time in a long while since the group crossed the Rubicon with previous visit to the Rubicon over 17 years ago on UA 1999. For many, including long time UA crony, Alabama native, Keith Bailey this was the first chance to run the Rubicon, and despite an unexpected issue with a transmission cooler, nothing would keep Bailey from hitting a “bucket list trail” on this day. Likewise, reader Ben Mahin and co-driver Chad Roy were able to swap in a new to them transmission back in Ridgecrest, CA, in time to make WJ Grand Cherokee tracks in the dirt at the Rubicon trail head. Also The Bubba Rope Jeep and crew; Rich Conlon and Jim Grass had sorted a couple fuel and wiring issues that reared their ugly heads during the heat of UA 2016 Day 2 in time to catch up with the group at the start of the Rubicon.

The Rubicon does not disappoint and this trip over what is actually a county road proved more than enough of a challenge to many a UA 2016 participant with the trail well-worn in for the season. More than once Warn winch cables were pulled, and Bubba Ropes yanked to get the whole (and complete) group to a camp site near Buck Island Lake. And camp we would but not without some unexpected visitors “dropping in” for a cup-of-joe first. As you’ll see below, the first half of the trip over the Rubicon was epic, and would only be outdone by what adventures were to come on the rest of the 2016 Ultimate Adventure. For now check out how the group started out attacking both these figurative and literal Rubicon’s on YouTube.
