Ultimate Adventure 2017 Invited Reader: Dan Strubbe – #UA2017Posted in Ultimate Adventure: 2017 on June 26, 2017
With Ultimate Adventure 2017 fast approaching, we’re getting acquainted with our returning reader and the four invitees who’ll join us on the trails. With that in mind, we’re excited to welcome Dan Strubbe and his 1990 Ford Bronco to #UA2017.
Like all of our readers, Dan has plenty of experience behind the wheel. He’s been running trails for 15 years, he’s a member of Under Construction 4x4, and he’s a repeat volunteer with the Rubicon Trail Foundation. He even has logged the occasional trip to Hollister and Pismo, adding sand and salt to his rocky resume.
Dan’s history with his 1990 Ford Bronco, a vehicle he bought in 2001 at the age of 16 after a long year of hard work and scrupulous saving, has been built bit by by into the trail rig you see here, adding things like a Dana 60 solid front axle; Yukon Gear & Axle chromoly axleshafts, Super U-joints, Grizzly differential, and Hardcore hubs; and a Ruff Stuff differential cover. At the end of a ¼-inch wall rear driveshaft is a 14-bolt axle and Gov-Loc differential.
Suspending all that powertrain hardware is a three-link front suspension with a track bar, Deaver coil springs, and Bilstein shocks. A custom rear leaf pack by Deaver joins forces with a RuffStuff shackle flip and shackles, as well as a block-delete kit. The Ford 351ci Windsor engine is mostly stock internally, but it gets some added pep via a high-output coil, 9mm plug wires, and gapped spark plugs for a hotter spark, and short headers, a custom Y-pipe into the catalytic converter, and a Flowmaster 40 Series muffler for better breathing. The removable top and half-doors should make this a fun ride on our summer route, and we hope Dan has a great time at UA.
