Back in the May '05 issue, we put the "Bed Toys" spotlight on the then-new Suzuki KingQuad 700. Well, more than three years have elapsed since we published that story, so we thought it was time to see what's new with Suzuki's flagship utility ATV with "King" in its name. Well, it turns out there have been some interesting changes.
New for '08, the fuel-injected, single-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid-cooled DOHC engine has been given a larger bore. The previous 695cc engine had a cylinder bore of 102 mm, but Suzuki enlarged that to 104 mm this year, which translates to an increase of 27 cc for a total of 722 cc. The stroke remains at 85 mm. So what's the big deal about 27 cc? Well, Suzuki says that this increase combines with the performance of the fuel injection to deliver stronger power and torque throughout the power curve. Most improved, they say, is the torque delivery from low- to mid-range. Suzuki notes that riders will feel the power pull on the top end as high-rpm horsepower is increased as well.
This upgrade in horsepower and torque led Suzuki engineers to upgrade areas in the drivetrain. To handle the increase, they upgraded several essential components around the driveshaft to increase their rigidity. Suzuki says that this makes them better suited to the more powerful engine.
Another change for '08 revolves around the Reverse gear rpm limiter. The KingQuad uses an rpm limiter for maximum control while operating in Reverse. For '08, the rpm limit has been increased to 7,000. Suzuki says that this will give riders more power when operating in low-traction conditions.
The KingQuad 750 is fitted with a fully independent front and rear suspension and it too has been tweaked by Suzuki engineers to compensate for the increase in engine power. Engineers reviewed the suspension settings front and rear and updated the damper's spring rates. According to Suzuki, this change gives better driveability and handling stability feel.
Ultimately, these changes for '08 complement the rugged DNA of the KingQuad 750. The rig still features a strong chassis, a smooth QuadMatic transmission, an easy-to-operate drive mode selector, a torque-sensing front diff, twin front disc brakes, a multidisc rear brake, and 25-inch-diameter tires. Further, there are still a mind-boggling number of Suzuki accessories available to make the rig even more valuable and capable on the trail or around the farm or ranch.
