Next we hooked the truck to a trailer that was just over the max tow rating of 6,800 for this truck. Our trailer is a very heavy steel unit, and with the CJ-5 on its back we were right at 6,900 pounds. The diesel Ram laughed at the load and drug it around with speed and stability thanks to the 3.0L V-6 and air spring suspension. We are used to driving a 1-ton Ram with a big Cummins, and admittedly this is a lighter-duty vehicle, but if you own a light trailer and a small two-door trail rig this would be a perfect tow vehicle. In fact, a step up from our tested 3.55 axle ratio to a 3.92 would have increased the tow rating to 8,500. We averaged 14.1 mpg when towing at around 55 mph.
