The Jeep Wrangler will soon have some competition in the convertible SUV market with the pending introduction of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible. After the disappearance of the misunderstood and unloved Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, the Wrangler was once again the only drop-top off-roader on the market. While there might be some minimal cross-shopping between the Evoque and Wrangler, for the most part, these two couldn’t be more different. Aside from a price that’s likely to be double or more of a base Wrangler, the Evoque is built on a unibody chassis with a transverse-mounted engine and powertrain. Land Rover released some photos showing a camouflaged Evoque convertible undergoing late-stage off-road validation testing.
Despite the arguably more car-like configuration, Land Rover claims the Evoque convertible is ready for almost anything you can throw at it, having gone through the company’s usual rigorous off-road testing. The company is dubbing it the “convertible for all seasons.” The Evoque convertible was unveiled in near-production form this past March at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Mechanically, the Evoque convertible is expected to largely mirror its hardtop siblings, with a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic. Pricing, official specifications, and fuel economy ratings are expected to be announced closer to the model’s introduction in spring 2016.
