2018 Land Rover Discovery Si6 Wins Four Wheeler SUV of the Year
Four Wheeler SUV of the Year
Four Wheeler is pleased to announce that the Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury Si6 is the winner of the 45th annual 2018 SUV of the Year competition.
“The Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury Si6 skillfully accomplishes the challenging task of balancing off-road capability with refined on-road performance while offering high-end luxury,” says Four Wheeler Editor Ken Brubaker. “The Land Rover name is synonymous with off-road–capable vehicles, and the Discovery carries on the tradition in grand form.”
The road to winning Four Wheeler’s prestigious 2018 SUV of the Year award was actually more of a rutted, rocky, hilly, snow-clogged two-track. After ramp travel index and track testing, the majority of the competition was completed off-road. In total, the weeklong test covered over 1,000 miles.
Off-road, the Discovery Si6’s standard electronic air suspension allowed the SUV to be raised to improve its approach, departure, and breakover angles, thus increasing its already impressive off-road capability. The outstanding Terrain Response 2, All Terrain Progress Control, and Active Rear Locking Differential—part of the optional Capability Plus Package—made off-road travel on even the most challenging trails a breeze. Slow-speed crawling in difficult terrain was a controlled, easy, no-drama affair thanks to a crawl ratio of 51.5:1.
The Discovery Si6’s 3.0L 340hp supercharged V-6 impressed judges with its outstanding performance. The engine offered up strong acceleration, whether off the line, passing on the highway, or carving sand dunes. The engine and transmission worked seamlessly in every situation, almost reading the mind of the driver to select the right gear for the task. And when it came time to rein in forward velocity, the Discovery’s four-wheel disc brakes flexed their muscle to bring the 4,751-pound SUV to a stop.
Inside the Discovery Si6 was a cabin that was not only very functional but also mega-luxurious. Getting comfortable was easy thanks to Windsor leather driver and passenger front seats, and a panoramic sunroof bathed the interior in natural light. The 825-watt Meridian sound system with 14 speakers offered up some excellent entertainment and the optional Drive Pro Package, which included items like adaptive cruise control and Lane Keep Assist, meant the latest innovations in tech were at the judges’ fingertips. Judges also liked the optional head-up display, front center console cooler compartment, and rear-seat entertainment system.
During testing, experienced judges rotated between the field of competitors on a regular basis, which provided equal testing time. Judges included staff from various publications within TEN: A Discovery Communications Company, including Four Wheeler, 4-Wheel & Off-Road, and Jp Magazine. Along the way, judges graded vehicle criteria and logged comments in the official judging books. When testing was completed, the vehicle criteria data provided by the judges was combined with performance and other data to create a score for each vehicle. In the end, the Discovery HSE Luxury Si6 won four of five categories to earn the title of the 2018 SUV of the Year.
