Installing Custom Fuel Wheels and a Switch-pros Wiring Panel to our Toyota Tundra Overland Project

Trail Ready Tundra: Part Five, The Final Chapter

We're calling our Toyota Tundra Overland project done. For now, anyway. If you've been following along for the last four installments, you know that started with a clean 2014 platinum, then handled the suspension with a BDS upper arm and Fox coilover kit. We added 35-inch Fuel tires to the existing Fuel wheels and added ADD bumpers and steps filled with Rigid LED lighting. We also added an ARE shell, Bedrug, and TopperLift to the Tundra to place the form and function on equal footing. Then we covered the entire roofline with a pair of low profile Front Runner Racks. We have just a couple more items to address before that final photo shoot at the beach.

We've been teasing the fact that there was going to be a wheel change. And since we're working with Thomas Hale from Fuel Offroad on this one, you know we just couldn't pick something off the shelf. Thomas whipped up a 20x9-inch set of Fuel's new Shok D665 design, but he coated them in a custom semi-transparen platinum that is used on some other MHT designs. The black center cap got the same treatment!

The other item we had to revisit is the Rigid LED lighting. We had yet to wire it up for two reasons. One, we were waiting for our Switch-Pros SP-9100 Switch Panel Power System, which as you will see, made the wiring a lot simpler. The other was that we wanted to work with the wiring pros at Cali-Raised Off-Road. They had us in and out in just a few hours with all the LEDs working with the touch of a button.

This 2014 Toyota Tundra is a joint venture with Fuel Offroad so you know we had to do something cool with the wheels. Their new Shok D665 wheel comes in black, bronze, and anthracite, but Thomas used a semi-transparent platinum from some of the other MHT brands. Fuel has an in-house custom shop for that.
The 20x9 wheels come in a zero offset- perfect for our setup, which included a set of 35x12.50R20 Fuel Gripper XT tires. Performance Plus in Long Beach, CA wasted no time getting the tires mounted on the wheels.
Even though the Gripper XT is a pretty aggressive tire, we had no problem balancing them out without a bunch of weight. From there we headed to our next stop, Cali Raised Off-Road in Buena Park, CA.
This Switch-Pros SP9100 is a compact, solid state switch panel power system. With a total of four 20-amp circuits and four 35-amp circuits, it will power all types of 12 volt accessories. The touch panel is weather resistant, and measures only 2x4-inches. The panel includes a Bluetooth transmitter, which allows you to program AND operate your system from any wireless device. The under-hood mounted power module is completely sealed, and rated to 125 degrees Celsius. It has a 3x6-inch footprint and comes with a fused power cable, and both harnesses which communicate with the touch panel.
The first thing we did was mount the power module to the top of the fuse box. Any open area in close vicinity of the battery will work.
We also located a terminal block for grounding and a couple of the accessory relays in the same vicinity for the sake of cleanliness.
The 16-pin plug and multi-colored wires are what connect to each of the Rigid lights we're using. Since the rears and each pair of step lights will be wired together, we will only be using five of the eight circuits.
This crew at Cali Raised are no rookies. They wasted no time making up all of the necessary harnesses to run in from the lights. Mainly for the aforementioned lights that would be running off the same circuits.
A good example is this section for the passenger step. They were measured for length, spliced together. And sealed up with heat shrink.
Each harness terminates with a weatherproof plug, which connects to each of the LEDs.
The harness for the steps runs straight into the frame rail, then was zip-tied to other lines along the frame.
From the wheel well, we found a clean route into the engine compartment.
For the rear bumper lights, we tied up the harness to the back-up sensors and followed them forward.
We ran our last two sections up to the rack and up to the front bumper. We don't have our Rigid LED light up on the rack yet, we were waiting on a set of accessory brackets from Rigid.
The 4-pin plug runs up to the touch panel, which will soon be in the cab. Here, we're testing it out before routing it through the firewall and mounting.
At this point, all the proper connections were made for each circuit, and the wiring was cleaned up with a handful of zip-ties.
The last step was to find a mounting area for the Switch-pros touch panel, but the guys at Cali Raised said they had that covered. First they popped off the shift cover.
Then they routed the touch panel harness right up to the back of the shifter.
Finally, they showed us this killer panel mount they carry from SDHQ Off-Road that's made specifically for the Switch-Pros touch panel! Talk about solutions!
We popped the touch panel in place, and snapped the new shift cover into its new home.
A couple days later, our LED mounts for the roof light came in, and we mounted it up and plugged it in in minutes. Our tundra was finally ready for its moment in the sun!
When we took possession of this 2014 tundra Crew Max, the only modifications were the TRD Pro grille and levelling spacers. It came a long way in a short time.
We started with the BDS upper control arm and Fox coilover combo, which made plenty of room for the 20-inch Fuel Shok and 35-inch Fuel Gripper XT combo.
Soon after, we ditched the stock bumpers for the stealth ADD bumpers front and rear, along with the side steps, and we filled them all with Rigid LED lights.
Then we added in the ARE topper and Bed Rug, followed by the low profile Front Runner roof racks.
With the flip of a switch, the shell rises up thanks to the Topper EZ Lift.
And finally, The EZ lift tent setup can be zipped into place for super comfortable overlanding. We're ready to get this Tundra off the beach and onto the trails.
