Milestar Patagonia STX for Our Roxor

A UTV tire for off-road use, part 1.

Milestar Tires came onto the off-road tire scene with their Patagonia M/T the same way a tatted-up biker with a crooked nose walks into a dive bar: unafraid and like they'd been there before. And while the Patagonia MT probably isn't the absolute best off-road tire ever invented, it is a darn good tire with which to enter the off-road marketplace. The tread design is memorable, effective, and different, to say the least. Since then, industry insiders have seen the company take steps to retain their place in the market. At SEMA last year our contacts told us about a new light-truck (LT) tire, the Patagonia X/T, that was in the works (and still is), but we also tripped over another Patagonia tire that has a real-world application for off-roaders. That tire is the Milestar Patagonia SXT, and here is the catch, it's a hard-core off-road tire, but it's also a UTV tire.

Tall UTV Tires for Our Roxor

Luckily for us, we have a UTV in our test fleet, and it just so happens that said UTV needed some bigger, more aggressive off-road tires badly. The UTV we are talking about is our 2018 Mahindra Roxor LE. Sure, it's very much like a more traditional 4x4 you may know all about, but technically, according to the state in which we live, this UTV can be plated and used in a limited fashion on road. Did we mention that the Patagonia SXT is available in a 34x10.00R15 and the tire is constructed with a Kevlar belt package that adds strength while saving weight? Also, the rubber features a silica-enriched compound that resists cuts and chips. Large tread lugs with wide gaps will help these tires transfer the 2.5L turbodiesel's power to the rocks, dirt, silt, and sand. Stone ejectors and small pyramids between the tread voids help eject small stones, rocks, and mud while sipes in the tread lugs should help with wet traction. The tires also have an aggressive upper sidewall for tire protection on the trail. The SXT is available in 28 through 32 inches tall for 14-inch wheels and 30 through 34 inches tall for 15-inch wheels. These tires are eight-ply rated but are intended for UTV use only so only have a weight rating of 783 pounds at 22 psi. Each tire weighs in at 42.5 pounds and has a tread depth of 19/32nds.

Part 1 of Our Tire Test

For now we mounted the Milestar Patagonia STX on a set of old Weld Racing wheels that we had converted to beadlocks at OMF Performance in Riverside, California, a few years back. This yields a super lightweight and durable combination for our Roxor, and at 22 psi the tires conform well to what terrain we've used them on. So far, we only have a few hundred miles on the tires and very limited off-road experience, but we will update how the tires do once we get a chance to really use them in some varying conditions on local off-road trails. For now, check out these new tires, how they look, and how they fit on our nearly stock Roxor. The Roxor currently has 1.5-inch front lift springs and some longer front shocks. We will need to lower the front bumpstops a touch and/or trim the upper lip off the front fender for tire clearance, and we will be sure to follow up on that with a web article soon.
