2016 Nissan Titan XD 5.0-liter Cummins Diesel V-8 Unveiled in Detroit
Is this the future of Pickup Trucks in North America?
Among the many vehicles making their debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit are some of our favorite, the trucks! One of the most buzzed about trucks in the past couple of months if not years has to be the all-new next generation Nissan Titan especially the one with the Cummins turbo diesel V-8. Well, it’s finally arrived!
Meet the 2016 Nissan Titan XD! We knew the next generation Nissan Titan would be receiving the 5.0-liter Cummins turbo diesel V-8 engine and we thought it would make for an awesome half-ton truck but we never expected to see a whole new different class of truck.
The profile of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD gives you a good look at the sculpted sides and chiseled body lines that Nissan says are meant to mimic a warrior. The extended front overhang was influenced by the engine in order to incorporate the high performance grille, charged air cooler and two-battery installation. Aerodynamics also played a role in the exterior design, which is improved from the previous Titan and incorporates a front spoiler, roof and tailgate spoilers, front tow hook hole cover, underbody covers, rear tire wind deflectors and a seal between the cab and bed.
Make no mistake though, the whole truck stands tall and proud. The LED headlights and taillights, signature Daytime Running Lights, puddle lamps, and step rails for cabin and bed entry/exit give it a modern touch with a workhorse attitude. It’s pretty obvious that the 2016 Nissan Titan XD is aimed squarely at pickup truck buyers who want to tow more weight than a half-ton can safely tow but don’t need the extra capacity that a comes with the HD category.
The result is a big beefy truck that can be considered every working man’s truck. It boasts a powerful 310hp 5.0-liter V-8 Cummins turbo diesel engine that generates 555 lb-ft of torque at just 1,600 RPM to get those heavy loads moving in a hurry even up steep grades while stuck in traffic. The 5.0L Cummins V-8 engine features dual-overhead cams, 32 valves, a compacted graphite iron (CGI) block, and Cummins’ first commercial application of the new M2 two-stage turbocharger system which helps reduce turbo-lag by balancing between the low and high-pressure turbos. A Bosch High Pressure Common Rail system helps reduce diesel clatter as well as NVH.
Backing up all that power and torque is a a heavy-duty Aisin six-speed automatic transmission that helps the 2016 Nissan Titan XD achieve a fuel economy that is said to be 20 percent better than a comparable V-8 gasoline powered truck from the competition. While no official numbers have been released yet, you can figure on fuel economy to be near the mid to lower 20 mpg mark.
The second-generation Nissan Titan will also be offered in additional cab, bed, powertrain and model configurations that include the Crew Cab that debuted in the Detroit, a King Cab and standard cab versions and with 4x4 and 4x2 drivetrains. The full-length ladder frame is fully boxed and is reinforced to offer more stiffness, vertical and lateral bending as well as torsional rigidity. The Nissan Titan XD also features a 151.6-inch wheelbase, 20 inches longer than non-XD Titan models. Future engine options will also include a new gasoline V-8 as well as an advanced gasoline V-6. No official figures or details have been released yet.
Front storage inside the 2016 Nissan Titan XD has been increased 33 percent while rear storage has increased by 28 percent over the previous generation Titan. A new 2nd row underseat storage includes a locking lid for added security and the integrated fold-out flat floor. The center console can hold a computer tablet with case or a 15-inch laptop thanks in part to the shifter being moved to a column stock. Other convenient interior design features include seven assist grips, console-side map pockets, 12-volt and 120-volt power outlets (in addition to the bed), remote start with climate control function, and Rockford Fosgate premium 12-speaker audio system. The special attention to detail even includes moving the glove compartment handle to the left hand side for easier access by the driver.
The 2016 Nissan Titan XD also features a tilt and telescoping steering column while the premium grade instrument panel includes a combination of analog and digital gauges, along with a 5.0-inch color display, unique diesel monitoring and maintenance displays, and 7.0-inch NissanConnectSM with Navigation, Mobile Apps and Services color monitor.
Other features include seating that is inspired by NASA. The standard front and rear Zero Gravity seats help maximize posture positioning for enhanced comfort during long-distance driving. Heating and cooling front seats are also available, along with a choice of water-repellant fabric or durable leather-appointments. Heated front and rear seats are available in both cloth and leather trim levels. To keep the interior of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD quiet for overall comfort, special attention was paid to reducing the intrusion of noise and vibration into the cabin. Titan XD utilizes laminated front and rear side glass, the first full-size pickup to do so to keep out all the noise associated with job site environments. Engine noise isolation and body sealing was also improved versus the previous generation Titan design. The 2016 Nissan Titan XD offers a smoother ride which is made better with the use of hydraulic cab-mounts that help isolate the occupants from road vibrations.
Towing and Payload capacities are the name of the game with this all-new 2016 Nissan Titan XD. The Titan XD features a maximum towing capacity of more than 12,000 pounds with a maximum payload capacity of 2,000 pounds (when properly equipped) while still offering fuel efficiency as well as half-ton pricing. The 2016 Nissan Titan XD meets the SAE J2807 compliance and for12,000-pound towing requirements.
the 2016 Nissan Titan XD features extensive towing, utility features and convenience aids – including a RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides, Around View Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD) and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights from outside the vehicle. Also available are Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and a front and rear Sonar System. Titan XD also includes an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame which is easily accessible in the bed.
The 2016 Nissan Titan doesn't seem to be a one trick pony as it also features off-road performance such as Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Brake Limited-Slip Differential (BLSD). A new off-road gauge uses accelerometer data to calculate the vehicle's pitch and roll angles. Among the list of new available towing aids is an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC) and Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control.
One familiar feature carries over from the previous generation Nissan Titan over to the Titan XD, the Utili-track bed channel system which features four heavy-duty aluminum alloy cleats that move and lock anywhere along the walls, bed floor and header tracks that give the user endless tie-down possibilities.
While the previous generation Nissan Titan offered a bedside storage compartment in the lower outside fender panels, the new Titan XD features an available dual lockable in-bed storage boxes that sit sight-unseen at street level and can hold a wide range of essential work and recreational equipment. Unlike other pickup bed storage boxes, the Titan XD units are accessible from inside the bed without having to remove a camper top or tonneau cover. The boxes are watertight (and drainable) and can be used as a cooler for picnics or tailgating. They are also removable for times when extra bed capacity is required. Other bed features include the popular spray-on bedliner, flush-mounted LED bedrail lighting, cargo and tailgate lamps, 120-volt in-bed access and a damped tailgate that is light to lift and smoothly damped when lowering.
As anyone who tows a significant amount of weight can tell you, a heavy duty rear axle can make or break the way a truck handles the heavy loads it’s subjected to. The Nissan Titan XD features a big beefy AAM 13-inch rear differential with 3.5-inch axle tubes and an available electronic locking rear differential while 4x4 models also get a front 9.25 inch differential. Pretty substantial hardware to say the least.
We’re pretty excited to see a whole new different type of truck mix it up with the rest of the truck segment especially since the 2016 Nissan Titan XD is sure to ignite a revolution in the Fullsize truck segment. One thing’s for sure, the Nissan Titan XD is here to stay and it’s poised to attract a whole new type of truck buyer!
