Jeep Kicks Off Sales in India with Wrangler, Grand Cherokee

Lower-Cost Market-Specific Model Planned Next Year

It’s no great mystery that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is banking most of its fortunes on the dual pillars of the Ram Truck and Jeep brand. While Ram is still predominantly a North American brand, FCA’s ambitions for Jeep are global and have been for the last few years. The latest market Jeep has entered is India. The brand kicked off sales on the subcontinent last week with U.S.-built Wrangler and Grand Cherokee models. Last year, Jeep partnered with Indian auto manufacturer and Jaguar Land Rover parent company Tata Motors to build a plant in Ranjangaon, east of Mumbai. The new joint-venture plant is expected to build the Compass and Renegade for the Indian market, as well as new, smaller A-segment compact SUV that will be sold in India and exported to other right-hand-drive markets, Automotive News reports.

India and other emerging markets are critical to Jeep’s long-term strategy of 2 million unit sales worldwide. The prices of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee models imported from the U.S. are staggeringly high, with the Grand Cherokee Limited going for the equivalent of $140,000. A Wrangler Unlimited sells for the equivalent of $107,000. This is the first time Jeep as a brand has had a presence in India. However, Indian automaker Mahindra has manufactured license-built Jeeps in India for decades.
