GM’s Next-Gen Hauler Warming Up for its Big Debut
We’ve snapped a few shots off before of GM’s next-generation 1/2-ton pickups, mostly in the frigid climes of Michigan. This time, the new trucks are donning their proverbial shorts and flip-flops for some road time in sunny Southern California. These photos were taking by none other than TEN's own Truck Trend Art Director Andy Mock on his way in to the office. The giveaways to these being GM trucks are the 6-lug wheels and corner bumper steps. The prominent A-pillar grab handles have also been a signature GM feature on its trucks of late. Mock also noted the “cool looking” lighting, typically a hallmark of GMC.
The other giveaway was the rectangular dual exhaust tips, another feature we noted on past spyshots of GM’s new 1/2-tons. What we know for sure so far is that the new trucks will have a leaf-spring rear suspension and a 10-speed automatic, at least on the higher trim levels. GM’s 8L90E eight-speed automatic will likely serve as the base transmission on lower-trim models, at least initially.
Specific powertrain details are unknown, but we’re hopeful for a V-6 diesel option, and it’s likely we’ll see a mild hybrid option based on the eAssist model that was sold in limited quantities in California in 2016. We expect GM’s fifth-generation small-block V-8s to carry forward in some role. The bread-and-butter 5.3L engine will likely carry on with the traditional overhead valve or “cam-in-block” configuration. The base engine could go to the 3.6L DOHC V-6 used in the Colorado and Canyon. However, we’re frankly bigger fans of the fifth-gen 4.3L V-6 with its beefier torque delivery. A DOHC version of the 6.2L V-8 is slated for the Corvette and Camaro and could potentially see use in the Cadillac Escalade, and Sierra and Yukon Denali models.
