Mil-Spec Automotive’s Re-Envisioned Iconic AM General: If Having an Ordinary Hummer H1 Wasn’t Cool Enough
Creating the Perfect H1
Mil-Spec Automotive (MSA) may be a new company, but founders Adam Mitchell, Chris Van Scyoc, and Ian Broekman have a well-thought-out and mature vision of what the iconic AM General Hummer H1 should be like. Their re-envisioned rendition epitomizes “the new era of adventure” and focuses on execution by design, attention to detail, and integrity in craft, according to MSA’s website. The result is one badass, ultra-luxurious, status-screaming SUV designed in Detroit and built in Wichita that all of us would dream of owning—if we should happen to find ourselves with a spare 220k, minimum.
MSA, not affiliated with AM General or General Motors, strips down the Hummer H1, retaining only the framerails and body, which are, of course, heavily restored and treated. Upon this foundation, the team creates its perception of the perfect H1, leaving no stone unturned and priding itself in ultimate craftsmanship, attaining supreme luxury while retaining all functionality.
The Launch Edition series, the company’s first creation that utilizes donor 1996-2001 AM General Hummer H1s, was introduced in June 2018 after years of design and development. The standard equipment on this beast is anything but standard. We’ll cover just the basics. The engine is a 6.6L V-8 Duramax LBZ, mated to an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission, with an estimated 500 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Four-wheel independent suspension, exclusive of MSA, contributes to improved on- and off-road ride quality. The electrical system is 12V, with modernized functionality and quick disconnect conveniences. An ARB air compressor aids in inflating the Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. Textured exterior body coatings, powdercoated components, and ceramic under-body coatings keep the machine protected and insulated. Re-enforced body panels are constructed of 6061 T6 hardened aerospace-grade aluminum. The interior is developed in-house, and simply put, it’s an MSA Design Works Interior. Think of a gutted interior that becomes the perfect canvas for high-quality materials, creativity, luxury, and extreme customization while maintaining a sleek, modern, and uncluttered feel.
Mil-Spec Automotive has now teased us with sneak peek sketches of its Second Edition, reportedly set to launch on July 20. It’s the company’s first official customer vehicle. Whoever that customer is, we want to befriend them.
