Possible Sighting: Redesigned 2021 Ford Ranger?

Australian Magazine Comes Across Super Duty–Inspired Midsize Pickup

The 2019 Ford Ranger is all new to the American market, but it’s based on a design that’s been around in other parts of the world since the 2012 model year. As such, it’s due for a redesign, and the sleuths at Australia’s Wheels magazine caught wind of what could be the truck's future.

Spotted uncovered near Melbourne was this unbadged prototype that more or less matches the current Ranger’s size and stature, but wears styling clearly inspired by the F-Series pickup. The little truck’s C-shaped headlights, two-bar grille, and distinctive nostrils recall the current F-150 and the just-revealed 2020 Super Duty, while its crisply flared fenders seem to take a page from the F-150 Raptor.

Furthermore, the new truck seems to incorporate a frame-mounted front steel bumper, like the U.S.-market Ranger, not the plastic front bumper cover of the global truck. The single rear image doesn’t show much, although a chrome rear bumper is obvious, as are a centrally located oblong badge and unusual, un-Fordlike taillights.

As Wheels rightly points out, the Ranger’s increasing relevance to the North American market could explain why the new truck would take so much inspiration from this market’s perennial bestselling vehicle. But then again, it’s also possible that this could be another manufacturer’s best attempt at copying the F-Series. The Aussie mag wasn’t able to peek at the interior (thanks to blacked-out windows), which might have helped ascertain this little truck’s provenance.

We’ve heard through the grapevine that it’s possible our market will only have a few years to enjoy the current Ranger before it’s replaced by a new generation, and these photos only stir that pot. But if the new Ranger, possibly due for the 2021 or 2022 model year, looks anything like this truck, we won’t complain one bit.
